Slightly Loaded Question....

I have a 2005 D3 which is used mainly on the road, general towing on once/twice a month used for for towing the horsebox across a field or two.

My four Michelin's that were on there when I bought it are about to expire and have been advised that either Pirelli Scorpion's or Goodyear Wranglers are the best replacements.

The size is 255,55,19 and both brands are similar pricing.

Duckworth have some great take offs with Wranglers so swaying towards this as can update the wheels at the same time but have conflicting advice ob which is best.

Any thoughts or pearls of wisdom?

Many thanks

I think you'd be fine with the LR branded Pirelli ATR's, I've towed trailers and stuck vehicles out of fields using them and they're almost indistinguishable from a road tyre on road. Perfect for my needs, which is why I've used them for the past 8 or so years.

I've yet to try the new GG AT3, I'd probably use the Goodyear Duratracs if I did a lot less road miles.

All of the above here, click on the individual tyres for more info. and ratings:

I put Goodyear Wranglers on my D4 shortly after I got it. Very good on the road indeed and when new, passable for the odd field foray. But they didn't last as long as I thought they should.

So, after a bit of research, mainly consisting of asking other 4X4 users, I narrowed down the choice of all terrain tyres to the Grabber AT2's, Pirellis or the Grabber AT3's, quoted in ascending order of price. I ordered the AT2's, seeing I'd had them previously and liked them and would save a bit. In the end, the garage were able to do me the AT3's at the price of the 2's, so that was that.

I've only had them on a day, but I've done about 30 miles or so in them, some cruising at high speed. Initial impressions are good. I didn't really notice any road noise from them. The wind noise that the brick-like (but perfectly formed) Disco eventually makes at speed was far more noticeable. The car seemed more planted too, but changing from old tyres to new would probably give you that anyway. And if their performance in the snow and off-road is anything like the AT2's were, then I'll be more than happy.

Thanks for the responses, I wasn't considering AT's as such because I was concerned about their on road performance and the majority of my travel is on road but if there isnt much difference then another option to consider.

thanks again for the advice

Cheers

I do in the region of 25k miles pa on road, but go off road to various degrees at least once week. Pirelli ATR's aren't noticeably noisier or less efficient than the Zero's. Neither is there any noticeable handling difference until you're really pushing it hard into corners. The Zero's are brilliant on road though.

The ATR's are way better off road though. Hence why I've used them for so long. Plus I can get c.50k miles out of a set. Thumbs Up

Only downside is that Pirelli make them in batches and occasionally supply can be erratic in the UK. If so you can normally get them via one of the Europe based on line retailers. I've only once needed to do this though.

ATRs. Thumbs Up On my 4th set and only thing they don't like is deep gloop/mud. They've more than coped with everything I've thrown at them. Tarmac, dirt tracks, sand, snow, long haul, short haul, etc, etc, etc. Just put a new set on ready for Ice Fest and then Lapland Road Trip in July, worn set on garage for sand driving in Portugal end of summer. Discerning choice. Mr. Green Mr. Green

A few random pics copied from another thread:

ATR mileage I'd the same as road tyres, no way can it be described as poor. Re wet grass, that's the D3's nemesis on any tyre, starting off 3 tonnes on slick grass will always be interesting.

Great news, I just picked up my Disco Tuesday, and treated it to a set of AT3s on Wednesday.

Super early doors, but initial impressions are good - as an indirect comparison, they seem more positive on road than the BFG A/Ts I had on my D2.

They retain that same oversize tread pattern as the BFGs, but add-in sipesbto the blocks which I'd expect would help in snowy / muddy situations.
