Heated seat burning hole!!!
Decided to investigate why my drivers heated seat has stopped working. Got the seat pad off and disconnected the wires. I started to peel back the seat cover working my way around the edges first and came across a section which looked burnt. Poked around with my finger and found 2 ends of a wire which were clearly once connected. There's no insulation on this wire. Anyway, it looks like at this point over time the wire has been coming into contact with the metal tray of the seat and shorted? That's all I can think has happened. So as a quick test I just twisted the ends together to see what would happen. To my surprise the cable got so hot that it started to melt the fabric around it.
Any ideas what's happening here? It was so hot I couldn't touch it.

I've figured this out. What's happened is that over time the foam seat pad has compressed on the side nearest the door and eventually the heating element wire has come into contact with the metal base pan of the seat, shorting out and breaking the wire. When I removed the seat base and peeled back the leather cover the problem was obvious, scorched foam and broken wire. Without thinking I just twisted the two ends of the wire together to test if the heater element still worked. This caused too much resistance at that very spot so it over heated. I did a proper fix with a crimp connector and all was well again. Temporary fix until I can get a new element. Anyone know where I can get one?
I also noticed that where the 4 fixing points are underneath the seat, they were all cracked which explains why there is a gap between the seat base and backrest. Anyone know of a seat or seat base going for salvage?

Interesting. That may explain the similar gap on mine. I must investigate.
