Hello all, relatively new to the delights of Disco owning, but after a very rocky start earlier this summer ( see my intro. post), things settled down and I was happy with my D3. Anyway long story short, after a service and drive belt replacement three weeks ago, it has developed a loud whooshing noise over the past few days, similar to having the heater fan on max, increasing gradually with the rpm,s. I have also noticed the FBH is active since the service (didnt know what that was until I had a search on here) so my question is, could the two be related and if not what the cause may be. Unfortunately the Garage that did the service is closed for the holidays, so I cant refer back to them until Tuesday, means parking it up for the weekend and commadearing the wifes Micra

Has this only recently been noticed, ie, since the temperaature has dropped?
Could be the fan taking a while to warm up and the FBH on constantly, if only short journeys.

My guess is the FBH was locked, probably down to low fuel level and fauts cleared at the service plus, you haven't run the tank down past a quarter recently so it's working normally.

If the temperature is low outside, the fan starts with the
engine, and gradually stops after a little while.
It has to do with the different tempsensors on the car,
that takes a minute or two to check all values,
so as a precaution, the fan goes "full pell" for a
little while and gradually disengage the viscous coupling..
THat gives the car a distinct "Volvo-lorry" sound..
I hope that this is what Your fan is doing, check after
a few minutes, listen if the fan has calmed down.

Could be the viscous fan running at max all the time. As said, it will run at max for a few seconds after first startup, but should quieten down. This would sap a lot of power from the engine.
Could also be a burst turbo intercooler or hose. This would be accompanied by loss of power, and black smoke under acceleration.

Thanks for the replies chaps, as it happens I am a "Volvo lorry" driver and very familiar with the "roar", the fault I am trying to describe is not quite the same, and is constant throughout the duration of a journey long or short, it seems to increase in volume relative to the rpm of the engine, becomes noticeable around 1500 and increases in volume to max heater fan, at around 2000 rpm. It could be turbo related given the rpm,s but I,m kind of hoping not and somebody out there has an easy fix, particularly as the warranty expires next week. Its enough to make me reluctant to drive it in its present state.

Fairly accurate description Gareth, although its always been smokey under torque.

Simple enough to check the vicious fan. Just pop the bonnet up and run the engine and you should tell based on noise and wind.  Mark.

Turns out its the crossover pipe, in the workshop awaiting parts, should get it back tomorrow.
