Auto Gearbox Question
Morning all, I've tried doing quite a bit of research into his but can't seem to find any info about it, So was hoping someone on here will be able to shed some light on this.
I've noticed on two discovery 3's now when driving from cold as soon as I lift off the throttle it appears to drop into neutral, this then stops as soon as the temperature guage needle passes the blue section this stops happening.
I'm guessing there's a reason for this.
Thanks
Dave.

Yes there is but usually a cheap fix by lowering the metal plate below the gear lever and greasing the linkage.

Thanks for swift reply Robbie, it's going into gear fine it's just when I come off the throttle when driving but once warm it doesn't do this almost as if as it's designed to.
Thanks

No, not as designed so fix as above to avoid the 'lost-all-drive-whilst-big-truck-was-coming-at-me' moment as it will only get worse.

I believe its part of the engine warm up stratergy;
In normal running, with the torque convertor locked up, when you lift the throttle the engine is kept turning by the momentum of the vehicle, so the ECU cuts of the injectors to save fuel.
However during warm up, to get the engine up to temp as quickly as possible, it does the opposite, the torque converter is prevented from locking up, so that when you lift the throttle, instead of cutting off the injectors, the engine is allowed to idle instead.
(At least thats what I think happens)

Thanks for the reply, sounds intresting and makes a lot of sense, clever stuff really, it was bugging me not knowing the reason for this happening.

Ahh, so not dropping into neutral then.
Sorry Robbie I should of explained it better really, thanks for the help though, and it's a good tip to keep the linkage greased I'm going to do mine now as well.
