Help! Disco 4 run low on oil

I have a Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010. Ran it low on oil and have a loud tapping coming from the top driver side of engine. Ive taken it to a reputable garage who are telling me the big end is knackered and it needs a new motor. does this sound right? drove to the garage fine no loss of power or any warning lights.

They are quoting £10k to put a short motor in it. Im not sure that its worth doing as its done over 118000 miles and prob only worth £15k ish. anybody know what it would be worth to a breaker?

Any recommendations or advice would be much appreciated, thanks in advance....

Have you not thought about getting a second opinion? It could be a broken valve lifter? The problem is the amount of labour to strip down to find out.

Did you drive it until the low oil warning came on?

no warning lights at all.

just started tapping, checked the oil and it was below min. put 4l oil in it to get it back to the max.

would a broken valve lifter tie in with low pressure and unburnt fuel in one piston?

whats involved in inspecting the valve lifters?

these guys are the most trusted locally, could take it to the main dealer but my previous experience of them is not great...

The D3 only holds 5.5 litres so I assume the D4 is the same maybe a tadge more?
If so 4 litres to top it up is pretty amazing!

I'm surprised it could get that low without all hell breaking loose for warnings and lights. Perhaps an approach to the main dealer that there is something critically wrong in the electrics failing to advise of low oil level would be a start, and the noise is a consequence of the fault/bad design/lack of mechanical dip stick, all of which are "features" from the manufacturer.

So 1.5 liters still in there if it does hold about 5.5 i've previously seen cars with about that amount of oil in it do no damage at all and yes a broken lifter would cause those symptoms you talk about but not to say it's not the crank until further investigation is done.If you want to find out you would need to strip off the rocker covers at the top of the engine to see if any thing obvious stares at you Thumbs Up

You didn't say low compression and unburnt fuel in your initial post! so on that basis I would say it's definitely Pooped!!

4 litres to fill means it was very low. You might have got away if it was fresh oil, but if its due a service and was hot, then it could have overheated what little oil was in there.
