I think it was to allow LR to sell more varieties to be honest.
My 2013 commercial is a 210bhp tdv6 with rotary selector and eight speed box.
Does just the same as my friends one with is a year older and 255bhp sdv6. Tows 3.5tons like for like. His is a bit less miles and a bit more punch!
Great vehicles.Discovery commercial tdv6 auto 2013

I'm assuming the SD engines return a better mpg?
I would think this is more to do with the change in gearbox to 8 speed.
Unless you're going to buy a commercial I would think the decision comes down to 8 speed or 6 speed and what spec your budget allows.
To make the decision harder you could get a high spec 6 speed or a low spec 8 speed for similar money although I'm not sure if this is still the case

There isn't a huge difference in MPG across any of them.
The 8 speed does have a few more horses than the 6 speed, but not a huge amount.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

The 3.0l tdv6/SDV6 is the same engine. It's just badged differently.
Early 3.0l badged tdv6 had no dpf, then dpfs came standard.
Later SDV6 with 8 speed had extra 10bhp.
All engines the same, the new ones still seem to suffer the same issues as the old ones. It's really just the different gearboxes

not always, the ZA (and Oz IIRC) ones never had the DPF --

I here you! TBH looking on the usual haunts for D4's I haven't come across a SDV6 with the minimum toys that I would like, I only really want Cruise control (as I am going to use her for towing my caravan to me this is a must!), Bluetooth, and park assist. Anything else is an added bonus as fair as I am concerned! But the There is a few good few TDV6's out there with not silly miles on around my budget with the toys on that I want.

In Spain the thing was like this:
when it came out the D4 lived on the market the 2.7 TDV6 of 190 hp and the 3.0 TDV6 of 245 hp, both 6 speeds, and the first manual option. When the manual gearbox disappeared, only the motor 3.0 was left with two possibilities, 211 hp which remained TDV6 and the 245 hp that happened to be SDV6 both with 6 speeds, and in the end the configuration is maintained at 211 or 255 hp Such as TD and SD respectively, both of 8 gears
I hope this helps!lost in translation!

The key is that the 3.0 badge disappeared because everyone already was. So if you see a TDV6 without a 3.0 mark will be a 211 hp, instead if it carries even the distinctive 3.0 that TDV6 will have 245 hplost in translation!

Was it not simply wanting an engine speced to get into the lower VED band, primarily used in later commercial variants?
