Heated steering wheel issue....appreciate ideas..
Looking for suggestions please.... my 08 G4 was fitted some years ago with a heated steering wheel by Geoff..
Typically now it’s the weather to need it it’s now started playing up... few weeks ago when you switched it on the heating light would flick on and flash and then go off but the wheel would not heat up...
Last week it started working perfectly and the switch light would stay on and the wheel would heat perfectly...
Today it has started to misbehave again...the light comes on for a nano second then goes off but wheel stays cold.....
Is this the clock spring playing up or something else? The clock spring was brand new when fitted...
Thoughts please? Anyone had this issue?
Thanks

It sounds like the clock spring but before changing it i would check all the connections and make sure the earth points are goodAndrew

Hiya
Plus 1 , ref using a multimeter to test the clock spring
Also don’t think it would hurt to check the switch contacts in case there dirty and just need a clean or maybe wires need re soldering on the circuit board
Plse let us know how u get on
Ps, hope ur ok mate

Thanks guys....apologies for the lack of quick response been mental busy...
Will need to get out the tester at the weekend... was hoping for the really easy answer that it was one thing or another...I.e the clock spring or my spongulated sprocket shaft....
The fact that it sometimes works is doubling annoying....
Exactly what happened to mine and it turned out to be the 12v feed to the heated clock spring. The wire had melted slightly so it would not work sometimes but on other occasions when the wires were not touching each other it would, but when switched on the wire got hot and melted a little more so that it shorted. I replaced the wire and all is well. I purchased a few spares so if you need one send me your address and i will post one down to you

It sounds to me like it might be something to do with the internal control circuitry, instead of the incoming power.
The flash of the light might be happening because there is a faulty element, or a faulty temperature sensor (NTC), or the wiring to one or the other.
The switch isn't a simple on/off switch for the element, it triggers the control unit in the wheel, which controls the lamp and the power to the element depending on the sensor.
As an aside, for others looking for the correct power connector though, I do them in the site shop for a few quid 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
Any issues with the site let me know!
