Germany 2007 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Tonga GreenDiscovery 3

Almost the same in Germany, but the outside must have visible tread Patterns too. Are there similar restrictions in GB?

Here this wouldn´t be legal and your journey could stopped by Police.

A couple of things to think about.
One it is right on the boarder for legal/not legal and a different Police Officer may have a different view.
You are driving a three ton tank that takes some stopping, the tyres also take a lot of load going round corners and round abouts, is it really worth taking the risk with your life, your pride and joy and other people hat you may come into contact with.
not only the above but if you were involved in a serious accident you may find yourself in a very very difficult and costly position.

So in my view subjective to the person doing the road side check, you may or may not get away with it, but it is not really worth the risk.

Iirc in the UK the tyres are now measured at an angle instead of straight across the width, why I cant remember!

Also worth remembering if tyres are worn odd then you have wheel alignment done, the odd wear will continue as the tyre gets worn up, so you may actually be fine and just need new tyres if you have had alignment done recently.

As most here have stated, the legislations says a minimum of 1.6mm across the entire circumference of the central 75% of the tyre.

As a current serving traffic officer - my advice would be to measure the usable tread of the tyre, then do the maths to calculate the central 75%, and ensure that the worn area doesn't fall within it.

Visually - I would guess that the tyre is legal, but if you want peace of mind, then measuring it is the only way to know for sure.

Certainly worth knowing though, if illegal then at one end of the scale could mean 3 penalty points with £100 fine and potentially even a prohibition and invalidation of your MOT, at the other end of the scale, the worst case scenario, imagine drunk pedestrian steps out and gets killed, even if not your fault, potential of gripping the rail with the overhanging question of "would your car have stopped even minuscule amounts earlier and lessened it from a fatal to a serious injury collision". Not a nice thought, worth knowing properly!

The centre line of the 75% green section has to be laid over the centre line of the tyre ...that tyre is very borderline IMO

Certainly better safe than sorry, IMHO I would have them off and changed without a thought. As for alignment I always use the Hunter system which I have found the best to ensure the best handling of all types of car inc sports and heavy weight 4x4.
