Its not always the obvious! I had a VW Caravelle, got a warning on dash stating to contact workshop, there appeared to be nothing wrong, everything worked and no strange noises or behaviour. Then reversing I to drive when I got home I noticed reverse lights not working, checked other electrics and hazards didnt work and neither did brake lights. Crap I thought , major electrcal problem. As always nipped onto VW forum and there was the answer, a dodgy brake light switch, onto internet new switch was less than a tenner, and step by step procedure from the forum and 10mins after new switch arrived all was working perfectly. Out of curiosity I contacted the main dealer re this problem and they'never heard of it and just to change the brake light switch they quoted £100+. Not saying its the same with yours but look past the obvious.. Good luck.

If its xyz you'll also loose the gear position indicator in your instrument panel and also a parking fault indicator. The sensor can be easliy recalibrated, I recommend you try this, there is a thread in here somewhere on how to do

Thanks for the replies guys.
It is a manual car so I will have a look at the calibration
Find a long straight and quiet section of road.Neutral
2) Select LOW Ratio.Shocked
3) Reverse for about 200 yards or until you get the beep and the R on the dash gear number indicator. And then a tiny bit more for good luck. Stop, then...Neutral
4) Go forwards in 1st until number appears. Clutch pedal must be fully raised each time.Exclamation
5) Then up through the Gears waiting for each of the numbers to appear. Do not skip any gears!Mad
6) Stop at 6th, back into neutral, switch off engine.Confused
7) After a brief rest, I took a couple of minutes just to make sure all the bad ju ju was gone and to have a quick wee as it was just all too exciting.Whistle
Cool Restart and select High Ratio and you're on your way.
