Winter Woes, Battery Issues
Guys,
Just thought id drop a post here regarding the problems some seem to have (including myself) in the cold weather and starting the LR3.
Seems like batterys have a pretty short life, say 4-5 years some even shorter.. So typically its that time of the year again..
A battery booster circa £40-£100 (some have air compressor etc) will give any tired battery an added jump, but more recently (after my booster went missing) i was looking forward to lifting the bonnet and getting a jump every few days from next door . Now battery replacements are documented on here and your looking about £100 for a replacement, however.. in normal weather conditions the battery will still suffice and will keep the beast with that all important charge for starting..
So in essence im booked in for a new battery "there goes my beer budget", but i had a "sod it, ill have a go" moment i hooked up my standby portable battery phone charger similar to one of these..
These little boosters are enough to give the beast a good old jump in case of emergency, I used one today for the first time but had doubts that it would be enough to turn over the beast.. but It did.. these little things are great to wack in the glove box.. great to give your phone a charge and also enough to get things going when you find yourself slipping on ice on the way back to the house after a battery fail..
Also one other note, wacking on the side lights for a minute or two helps get the battery ready for a big drain.. so keep that in mind..
I wouldnt for a minute suggest that you can crank over the beast more than 10 times, however if you dont have trouble starting normally then these little things will help in the cold..

I've been considering one of these for a while. Is the ebay one the actual one you went for?

Unless I have misread this which I often do. Just buy a new battery it's a lot less painful with the issues it will cause.

This I just don't understand.....batteries (of the booster starter type) are like bank accounts....
What goes in should come out.....by rights
If you leave untouched.....the investment can leak away....some slower than others....my NOCO lost zero in 3 months....
Took 35 mins to get back to 100% after 9 abortive attempts to start a 6.0 Diesel engine on a piece of quarry machinery (went to 80% full) fault with crank angle sensor.....this fixed engine started within 5 or 6 seconds).
Putting the side lights on to get the battery ready for a big drain ?
.....can only reduce (a bit) the actual charge that's stored in there.....
these are items that don't have feelings....!
..... putting side lights on will only reduce the stored charge.BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Hi all, new battery is the way forward... but i have found these boosters can be handy for a number of reasons.. not trying to flog any just got handed one by a friend as my phones always uncharged
So as im with charging mobile phones and my disco 3 battery is on the way out this just gets me out of jail for those cold mornings.
Defo something for the glove box...

Cant find the supplier as it was given to me... but heres a link with details...
Normal operating for my disco battery works fine in the normal weather... but the short trips can overkill the battery so this is invaluable..

The little trickle chargers are well worth the money to keep a battery in tip top nick.
People on here like the ctek, Im tight plus theres plenty of my ctek has failed posts, so its the lidl/Aldi 3.8A unit for 14 quid, got two and both are used all the time.
Even a new battery on a D3 needs some tlc if used for short journeys.

thks lynall
rang tanya, really helpful
ordered the EA1000 Exide Premium Car Battery 017TE
on reading through a lot of posts i see like u say ref trickle chargers etc
wondering about in the summer in installing a split charge system
so that it can at least keep my main battery topped up, then in the winter having a second battery will be a reserve
haven't got a clue how to do one, but imagine there's info on here how to install one
but then i don't know if i would have to get a leisure battery , etc
got some reading to do

Two batteries are good but as I do lots of short journeys (5 miles 10 times a week) the main battery doesnt really have time to charge up never mind a second one

i'm the same ref short runs
but going to make a point once a week of taking the dogs out further afield i.e., driving 10 x miles or so it will give them somewhere new and give the landy a decent run
have started to read up about the split charge systems on here and looking online about them
prefer to spend reading for ages to get the details right
