Andi.
No I don't either.
LR manuals are rubbish.
I think it would be cheaper to get a hire car to go skiing rather than change the glowplugs.
I like this video though.
Oil the glowplugs, drive car for a week, and slowly try and remove the glowplugs with a low torque.
Bloody things still break!

Don't forget the glow plugs aren't the only means of stopping your go anywhere veeeeeehickle in the cold, if it gets cold enough and it's humid then moisture causes icing in the intercooler or associated pipes.
Hiring seems a sensible option.

Mines Had same issues yesterday at 0 degrees, too quick with the start before the plugs have had chance to do the job i think is part the problem , keep turning it over just resulting in lots of smoke when it eventually starts , this morning same temperature longer with the ignition on and it started first time , Once it hasn't started results in a lot of unburnt fuel if you keep turning i would guess , so less chance of start till its cleared ? would this be the case ?

My mechanic is of the same idea, glowplugs and probably several are out as the car does not start even after 3 or 4 cycles of the plugs without crank.
I am going to try and get the "worse scenario", but because I go skiing twice per year and normally for at least 2 weeks, I think it would be worth sorting the problem out properly.

Glow plugs aren't the only thing that can affect cold starting. Mine was a pig to start until all the injectors were changed. Now starts on the money whatever the temp. In cold I just let the glow plugs light go out & away she goes.
Before
After
OK, both in pretty warm temps but the cold starting pre-injector change was a complete pig requiring two or three cycles of the plugs and then would run rough as anything for 20 second or so.

one of the injectors was faulty and replaced during the November service. I believe he checked all the others
I am hoping for the same result once the glowplugs get changed

I was up in northern Norway/Finland recently and although the car wouldn't start straight away with just the glow plugs (I didn't cycle them), a pre-heat with the FBH and it started first time, every time. Not sure what night time temps were but coldest during the day was -20oC.D3 SE with Hankook MT 275/65/R18, IID BT Tool, ProSpeed rock/tree sliders + compressor guard, RLD sump guard & winch tray + 13,000lb hidden winch, Gearbox guard, Frontrunner 80l aux tank with fuel gauge, V8 brake upgrade, Traxide USI-160 dual battery system, Frontrunner ladder, custom boot storage, Lazer LED driving lights, de-cat exhaust, Aftermarket Oro TPMS, i7 Mac Mini touch screen install (running Windows 10) mirrored on rear screens.

I also tried that method in -4C, on, light on then off, cycle key without crank and still didn't start. I think I cycled it about 3 or 4 times before cranking.
let's hope that mechanic does not break any...
Make sure you get a confirmed quote in writing if you replace the glow plugs. When it goes wrong it is very, very expensive!
No garage in their right mind would do this.
Or if they do, the cost of body and head removal/work (£2k+) will be built in to the quote

the car is due to go in at the end of the month to have the glow plugs changed. they have already advised me that there are problems with the removal of the plugs, let's hope this solves the problems and that none break.

News from the front.
They managed to remove 2, the others are well and truly stuck, but none snapped as yet. Landy in bits and team from U.K. Coming over to remove the rest and deal with any snapping if they happen. Apparently, these guys go all over the uk doing these kinds of jobs. Not cheap but the two glow plugs were faulty, so I suspect the rest will ever in the same sorry state.
Let you know the damage once I get her back, but don't expect to get much back out of 2K
