NoDo$h wrote:Yeah, about clay bars. What one is recommended? I've still get a Megs one, but it's done a couple of cars prior selling them and is frankly fit for the bin I suspect.
don''t tell anyone I'm asking about claybars!
Don't worry NoDo$h, we'll just keep it amongst ourselves......
So, I use a Mothers claybar, only fine grade, with Mothers detailing spray for Lube. You need to be careful you don't get too aggresive a claybar otherwise you may take off your recently re-sprayed paint!
What's your take JKP? Remember, Al doesn't want everyone to know he's asking about claybars, as that woiuld be really getting into this detailing lark & we wouldn't want anyone to get the impression that he's ben bitten by it would we...... Bodsys Brake Bible

It's a clay bar (suprised...!) that is used with a lubricant to get rid of all the tiny bits of road grit, metla fillings & general contaminants that get stuck into your paintwork. you know when you run your hand over the paintwork and it feels a little rough, well that's because you've got impurities in the paint.
These are some of the clay ratings (stolen from another site )
Detailer's Clay - Abrasive Ratings (on a scale of 1 to 5)
Clay Magic® - Red- very aggressive; most surface marring - 5/5
Sonus Grey Block Detailing Clay- very aggressive; a lot of surface marring - 5/5
Top of the line purple- slightly less aggressive - 4/5
Clay Magic® -Blue- less aggressive; less marring - 3/5
Mother's - Yellow- 2/5
Sonus Ultra Fine -Green- 1/5
I use Mother's Yellow with detailing spray to lubricate. It's not very aggressive, but I hope I don't have too many contaminants on my car yet. you can still feel a difference after usinng it.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MOTHERS-California-G...dZViewItem
Essentially, you do a small area at a time and GENTLY move the clay over the paintwork, keeping it lubricated, if it feels sticky to the paintwork, then either you're pressing too hard or you're not using enough lube
Once you've done that, then give it a coat of [EDIT: Polish and then] wax/sealant and it'll be much better protected for the future.
The really aggressive clay bars will require you to then machine polish afterwards.
That's my quick summary of it I'm sure there'll be some more 'detail' coming soon..... Bodsys Brake Bible

I mostly use Sonus green and have found it to be very good. As a starter the megs kit you can buy from halfrauds is very good and comes with a lube spray and two bars, along with a pre-wax cleaner sample bottle.
Don't use anything other that a fine clay if you do not have access to a machine polisher, although you may get away with it if you keep the clay warm when using and spray a lot of lube. Not recommended for a dark car.

No, you'll need to polish it. A clay will only remove surface contaminants or put in small scratches depending on how aggressive it is.

This seem elite have a reasonable price for the Sonus Green? £6.25 per bar with discounts for buying 2, 3, 4 etc.
