Using a D4 for short journeys

Anybody use their D4 diesel for short hops ? I am considering one, as they are practical for my needs, dog, family and gear etc. However during the week I only generally use a car for a 10 mile round trip once a week. Very Happy At weekends it can be a 40 mile round trip.

Whilst I would like a 5.0 V8 D4 Evil or Very Mad finding one could take longer than I have left on the planet!

So ...does anybody use one for short journeys and how do you prevent issues with the dpf etc.

I do.
2 miles twice a day during the week then it works hard at the weekend.
The DPF sorts itself out. Nice throaty sound Rolling with laughter

Wife uses ours two to three times a day, short journeys, then once a week as much as five miles, Shocked fuel consumption is dire though, around the 22 mpg, might do a twenty mile round trip at the weekend unless we are going away with the Tin Tent, tank of fuel lasts us around two weeks usually. Four years now with a DPF, don't even know it's fitted to be honest except for the growl occasionally when it's regenning.

Been up to Lincolnshire twice over the last week though, mpg is sitting at 32.7, happy with that as it's been adjusted with the IID Tool and will give me 32.3 when I fill it up and put the details in the app.

Surely lots of short trips with the engine unable to reach normal operating temp will lead to premature engine wear? I always take my wife's car if I'm just popping to the shops! Wink

I too do less than 10k a year nowadays in my MY10 which has over 100k miles on the clock and have had no issues to date.

I do nothing special, other than topping up the battery charge with a CTEK a little more frequently than I used to, especially during the colder months. Using the timed/remote FBH to prewarm the engine helps reduce engine wear and keeping engine revs down until shes warmed has always been a good idea with any engine.

For me using SWMBOs for short journeys wouldn't be a real benefit as she has the MY16 D4 Laughing

There were no UK spec V8 D4's built as far as I know. The petrol V8 was dropped from the UK market during D3 production.

Short trips are OK and the DPF seems to cope. However, short trips with the engine not getting up to temp is viewed as a Bad Thing and will lead to more engine wear than usual. But maybe modern oils and regular changes of oil and filter will mitigate this wear. Also, the mpg for short journeys round town is dire. I'm lucky to average 21 or 22 mpg if I have a few weeks just dotting round local roads.

Thanks chaps. I have never owned a diesel before, so wanted some insight into low miles per week. I am familiar with warming up engines and keeping the revs down till it's all up to temp. Us motorcyclists make the best car drivers Very Happy

There were a few D4 5.0 V8 cars that were UK registered, poss SA or Aus built models. However as I said earlier I could have shuffled off this mortal coil before one comes onto the used market. Laughing

I have my eye on a couple of HSE MY10 cars that I am going to follow up on.

Only ever had three issues with my MY10, split turbo hose, worn through top radiator hose (got modified in later versions) and a weeping transferbox seal - all in the first 3-4 years. Love the motor and won't change it. BTW early MY10 D4s have no DPF, but have the higher BHP engine Mr. Green

Both cars are on a 10 plate - one June 2010 registered has '3.0 TDV6 HSE' on the tailgate and the other a Sept 10 reg car has 'SDV6 HSE' - both are listed as a 242bhp - I guess this is just a LR quirk?

SDV6 will have DPF.

At some MY after MY10 the SDV6 got a BHP boost to compensate for the powerloss the by then "standard fitment" DPF imposed.
