Whats is this wire for?

Having replaced my battery today I noted a connector which was not connected. Does anybody know what it is for? I don't want to plug it back in incase it was unplugged previously for a reason.

England 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Rimini RedDiscovery 3

It's used between the factory and customer delievery.

The other half is just a dock to hold it in (with no metal contacts) so safe to plug in
