Hi all
After a little advice.
After a 285 mile drive to Penzance airport, car is waiting for me while I spend a few days on the Scillies.
On the journey down, had cause to make a stop and it sounded like an idler bearing or the alternator bearing had gone. I recognise this sound but on pulling away, it went completely until I stopped again or the car went to tick over.
I'm having a wild guess that something is wrong with the viscous fan as I have an IIDBT and have no error messages, temps are fine and it just had an oil change.
I'm travelling to a friends outside Falmouth on Monday afternoon and will remove the fan to confirm if the noise stays or goes.
Car had belts changed 20k miles ago, new alternator shortly after and has all new tensioner and idlers as Geoff doesn't do half a job.
Anything else it could be, drives fine but as I said, makes a racket when on tickover, whether stationary or on the move.
Any advice or tips greatly appreciated
Gary

Did you get both tensioners replaced, they call one a tensioner but its just an idler to confuse things!

Geoff and Flack replaced the lot but will get the fan out of the way Monday and see what I find. Hopefully that will be the issue and will run without a fan until I can get a new one.

Belt tensioners tend to rattle on tick over and go quite when revs increase, not necessary the bearing but the tensioner spring inself, when they wear they seem to go slightly out of line as is on a twist. Simple test is to put a drop and I mean a drop of oil or water on the tensioner without getting the oil on the belt and see if it changes note.
The alternator has an unmistakeable dry grinding noise.
Try the fan by rocking back and forwards. The fan will be doing very little work at this time of year particularly on a long run, you could almost take it off and run without it providing you don't keep the engine running when stationary after a long run
If you do run without the fan, although I think it's the tensioner, put the heater on full if necessary to keep the temp down. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

That was a disappointment.
Attempted to drive from Newquay airport to a friends today but gave up after
losing power steering and temps increased.
The auxilllliary belt had come off completely and as I had no tools, gave the nice chaps
at Green Flag a call. he removed the fan cowl and it was obviousl what had happened.
One of the alternator bolts had snapped in the bracket and the other was nowhere to be seen
and the alternator was floating in mid air???
Unable to effect a roadside fix, the D3 was towed back to the base and we were loaned a Renault
Modus to make the 285 mile journey home, the D3 would be returned to me later in the week with
either a new bracket or the remains of the bolt drilled out from the bracket and new bolts locktited in place.
I hope the car will come out of this unscathed as I had the IIDBT plugged in had the wife monitoring the live values as soon as we left the airport and pulled up, hopefully before any long standing damage could be done.
Fingers crossed!!

Thanks Mikey but I hope to have the car back from Newquay by the weeks end so will let the
mechanics at Tonkin sort it out.
With any luck, they will remove the bracket and drill out/easy out the
seized bolt part and replace the bracket and re-attach the alternator.
This was about the only item on the front of the engine that I replaced as Geoff and Flack
did the rest when changing the belts last year so could be bad luck (bolt breaking) or something
I managed to do when re-attaching the alternator.
I had lathered the bolts with copperslip (force of habit as a D2 owner for many years) and was told this was
not a good idea by the Green flag mechanic so it may all be down to me anyway.
Live and learn!!

They are the Green Flag franchisee in that part of Cornwall and seemed pretty on the ball.
My mate is from Falmouth and said they were OK for what I needed doing (he drove out to meet me once
I had thrown in the towel and called Green Flag).
We'd just spent a very boozy 3 days over at St. Marys together.
Not sure how competent they would be on the more technical stuff but certainly the chap (Mark) that came out to me knew Landrovers pretty well ( I was his third Discovery yesterday and the only one he couldn't fix at the road side) so I'm pretty happy letting them loose on my D3.

Oh I see, yeah I'm not sure I would take my D3 there. Fingers crossed they can sort it for you! If not try mid Cornwall 4x4.
Is your D3 at the Bugle Tonkins?

We were recovered to their site just outside Newquay Jamie and I'm probably
with you in that I'd rather leave the technical stuff to someone LR trained but
I could handle this if I had the time and it just seemed sensible as they weren't
heading east until the end of the week to let them sort the issue while they had it
at there place and return the car to me all done.
Looks like I will be retiring to the west country in a couple of years (May not get all the
way down to Cornwall but North Devon is high on the list) so will be in touch with one of
the site sponsors way before the move happens to make sure that I have someone in place
that can look after my D3 as I doubt I'll be replacing it.
I just can't see me in a fuel sipping, tree hugging eco car in ,my lifetime, think I'd rather walk!!

Yes I think I know the place summercourt area? I'm in Newquay so not to far away!
Are they returning the car back to you?
Woody32 is the man down this way so it would be a good idea to contact him. When your ready to make the move down here!

Yep, not sure if on a lowloader or just driving back to me as I have their loan car but should be back on my driveway Friday.
Woody will get a call next time I'm in the area but if he's the West Country version of Geoff
(is that even possible), then he will be the one doing the technical stuff that I'm too much of
a wuss to handle myself.

Hi Jamie.
It's coming back today. Left Newquay not long after 9am so expect it to turn up
between 3 @ 5pm, guess it depends on where I am on the delivery list.
Will be nice to get back in the old bus, especially as the weather is turning
foul later this week.
