Reverse light socket pinout (D4 rear lights)

Hi!
I own a D3 with D4 rear lights.
Just wondering if anyone knows why there are 3 wires running to reverse light sockets?
I understand that one is a positive lead, one is a negative, but what is the third?
Is there any pinout of the socket?

I'd like to change reverse light bulbs with LEDs that are bulb-and-sockets and they have only two ( + and -) wores so i have to cut the stock socket and solder the new lights.

Thanks to everyone who can help me with this matter.

Cheers,

Ilya

Dont really understand what your trying to say, I have D4 rear lights in my D3 and the led reverse bulbs are a straight swap, you dont have to do anything with the wiring

Should have posted a pic if what i want to change the reverse ligts to.

These lights substitute not only the bulbs but also the sockets. That is why i have to mess with wiring.

Now I don't know the answer, but would they be anything to do with the canbus/lamp fail detection?

Or maybe simply just an addtional 12v feed to elsewhere?

Why the choice of a complicated bulb? Is it perhaps brighter than the straightforward plug in replacement?

AFAIR, there is no rear bulbs fail detection in D3. Don't know if the same applies to D4 rear lights.

Hmm, in D4 rear lights all bulbs are interconnected, may be the bulbs are connected in a cascade ie common earth or common 12v?

Is the extra wire a positive feed to something else like a reverse camera perhaps?

Narpy, i don't have a camera. The wires are stock D4, this is a reverse bulb holder in the first post as it is.

You might not have one fitted but the wiring could still be there if your car was spec'd to have one installed as an option.
It could be a standard loom. Wink

rather than connecting all the earths together at one point, they like to chain them around.

The positive will go directly to the car plug.

The other 2 are earths (and need to be connected for the other lights to work) Be careful.

Try and leave the bulb holder

THANKS, Pete!
Found the diagram on the forum http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use..._Light.png, must have missed it and just talked to my dad. He says what you say: one is 12v and other two are earth wires going in and out of the bulb holder.
Now i identify them, solder 12v to 12v of my led, connect earth wires and solder the united to earth of the led.
PS: will use Superseal connectors to make it plug and play if need to revert to stock bulb holder.
My thanks to all the participants. Will post the result.

What are these lights you have fitted? I'm looking for some brighter ones. Do you have a link?
