Gear Lever position indicator not illuminated. FIXED

My wife drove the D3 for the first time the other night and asked noticed the centre console around the gear lever doesn't light up with gear position ie PRND. As it was dark she couldn't see which gear she was on. I had sort of noticed but from driving in daylight just new how many clicks needed to move from P to D etc.
I take it there is not a bulb or fuse to simply fix this? Could there be a loose connector somewhere? The dash display shows the position if you know where to look.
Any ideas chaps please. Can't even work out how the trim around the gear selector comes off.[/b]

Anyone?
I can't be the only person to have this issue? Surely?

I had the same problem on my 05 D3 when I got it - turned out I needed to replace LED panels. Ended up getting the black plate with the LED's on at the bottom of the gear leaver - don't remember it being crazy price though

I get no illumination when in sport mode also. It is a bit scary to know how much force to use to get the cover off to have a look, don't want to break it.

Thanks for that Landie71.

Before I splashed out on new panel I decided to have a look to see if I could see anything obviously wrong first.
Did a bit of research on how to dismantle the centre console - thanks DISCO3.CO.UK - and this afternoon I set to work. Must point out I'm not a mechanic but happy to try my hand at this sort of thing.

First part was removing gear knob, into N and then a good upward tug and off it comes!

Next remove EPB screw and rubber moulding under 12v sockets

and then squeeze fingers under the cup holders and pull hard

Pull it up all the way back to the centre armrest cubby and with the lid open the whole panel comes away. Under here are the wires for EPB and Terrain Response control, after unplugging these I can see shifter panel cable was not connected (result!!)

Here it is plugged back in

and checked to see the indicator light was now illuminated

It is lit believe me!

While it was all apart took the opportunity to clean everything up

and got the Meguiars to work on the shiny knob Very Happy
Before

After

As I was feeling brave I popped the H trim off around the radio to see if I could find why there is an occasional rattle around the airvent

but after checking all screws were tight I founl alittle bit of play in the upper glove box hinge, just visible here

Will leave that for another day but all in all pleased with a good result and all back together with a healthy red gear position illumination.

Saved myself £50 on buying a new part and had a bit of fun learning more about my D3.
Incidentally, when I plugged the LED power lead back on I discovered it wouldn't fit due to one of the connector prongs being bent as though someone had tried to force the connection without lining it up properly. I guess they gave up trying and just left it undone. I know the previous owner had had the EPB repaired in the recent past so this likely stems from that.
