Hi Robert, I've just texted Woody for you, he's down in Wellington so not a million miles away from you - he's a cracking bloke and has already swapped out/replaced a few engines (including putting a D4 one into a D3 Laughing ).

He's keep an eye out for a PM from you, it's worth dropping him one as you have nothing to loose - he said in the text that the Eurojag is the best option, but drop him a pm and hopefully you two can get talking Thumbs Up

Edit user = Woody32

I'm sure someone will be along to verify / correct. However, have you actually asked Disco Mikey or Woody32 (Taunton) for a price?

So here's a response from one of the ebay guys when asked what I would actually be getting for my £3k plus VAT (plus £450 to collect the car from Cornwall), and what other expenses there could possibly be once they've started the work;

Ebay guy wrote:
You would get a new crankshaft in your engine along with new main and big end bearings, new timing belts, new gaskets and seals, piston and connecting rods if replacement needed, cylinde head valves recut and seated, new stem seals, new head gasket, heads pressure tested, checks for cracks and leaks. Only additional costs on this vehicle could be turbo and the engine block if has buckled.

Block if needed to be replaced would be a £600 surcharge.
Turbo if needed each would cost £800.

So that's potentially £6250, which is a bit different from the advertised £3k, and when I can get an engine from a reputable place like Eurojag for £6k and have it fitted for £1500 at a local specialist which works out at £1250 more, I know what I'd rather do!

I spoke to my local main dealer who serviced it in September today who were helpful, and have also emailed Land Rover, so will see what comes back from that before making any decisions.

I thought though the crank can't be changed or rebuild as the parts are not available.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me can say for sure what can/can't be done externally of the engine manufacturer

Is it not worth checking with the insurance ombudsman that the warranty company are playing ball. Seems that they are playing the usual 'Get the warranty company out of jail card'

Failing that, can the garage repair the crankshaft as part of 'fix' so at least the warranty company have to cough up the £5k Whistle

My D4 has 18 months LR warranty left, after that who knows what to do!!

I really feel for you but for Land Rover to sit back and expect people to fork out £16k to repair cars worth £22k? that have only covered 89k miles is nothing short of shocking.

The car is still off the road, Land Rover are supposedly getting back to me today to let me know if they're prepared to help me out with the cost of a new engine, but they have basically told me not to expect good news. I've been in touch with Eurojag who say they can supply a second hand Jaguar engine which is pretty much the same as the D4 unit, does anyone else here have any experience of fitting a Jag engine? This is coming in at just under £4k.

In other news, my second car, a VW Touareg, also suffered catastrophic engine failure yesterday, the camshaft snapped. You couldn't make it up! Sad

I think Disco Mikey might be referring to a reconditioned engine (which hasn't been offered to me?) rather than a second hand engine which from my understanding is what is being offered at £4k.

Sorry to hear your additional bad news, that really is shocking it should happen twice, especially from different manufacturers Shocked

A few people on here have fitted Eurojag engines, as mentioned Disco Mikey is one to speak with, along with Woody32 and he would probably be your most local option as well. I think he is currently changing an engine on a D4 at the moment.

Is your Discovery in High Lanes Perranporth at the moment as they have one with a failed engine?

Good luck with Land Rover and VW and the warranty companies as well!!!

That was a while ago. Things may have changed since then

They also have different prices for the Jag and LR 2.7 engines, so they may have priced me for an LR version... Confused

Disco_Mikey, were you thinking of a reconditioned engine from Eurojag, or a second hand unit from a crashed vehicle? Also, have you got any experience of fitting a second hand Jag engine, and if so are there any difficulties due to the fact it's not from a D4? Any help appreciated! Very Happy

Soo, the saga continues, after getting nowhere fast with the car sat at my local independent LR specialist for over 6 weeks, I had the car transported to my local main dealer, who have so far been absolutely fantastic.

I have been dealing direct with LR customer services, they have been pretty awful, basically saying that due to the mileage of the car ( 82k on a 2010 car) they weren't able to offer any help. The service manager at my local dealer got involved and instantly managed to obtain a 20% reduction from LR, he is hopeful that he will be able to improve on that. On Monday they will be contacting my warranty company on my behalf and they're confident that they will at least get a contribution if not the full £5k I'm covered for. So, with a bill of around £13k, 20% off that brings it to £10,400, if they manage to get the warranty company to honour my warranty it will bring the bill down to in the region of £5400 for a brand new engine fitted by LR, which is a darn sight better than the £9k for a recon engine fitted by a independent garage which I was faced with a few weeks ago.

I'm feeling a million times better about the situation and am pleased at the thought of having a brand new dealer fitted engine, obviously £5k is a lot to shell out but I can cope with it knowing I've got a new motor to go forward with, and I've learnt a lot of lessons in the meantime!

Advice to anyone looking at buying a D4 - never buy privately or from a non-franchise trader, ALWAYS buy from LR, with the best LR warranty cover you can get. Advice to anyone faced with the dreaded crankshaft issue - go straight to your local LR dealer and get them to fight your corner, otherwise it can be an uphill battle in every direction you take!

Oh, and as for my Touareg with the camshaft issue, it was back within 5 days completely rebuilt with a bill of £1400, a bit different to the Disco!
