On the back of these threads regarding crankshaft catastrophes I have just taken out a three year warranty with Warranty Direct for £2148.00 .
Main dealer labour rates and full monty cover.
I now feel less paranoid than I did.
I also feel skint!
Sounds about the right price. I paid £1900 for 3 years of Luxury Care in 2014 with WD, and it's only got a year left. No claims in the last two years but peace of mind is priceless MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

OK, so after the Christmas break I went down to the garage to get my warranty documents, unfortunatley I'm only covered up to £5000 per incident, which is the first kick in the teeth, but furthermore according to the garage who have spoken to WMS, they are not willing to pay anything towards a new engine, they are only prepared to pay up to £5k to fix the crank shaft/bearings/case (excuse me if I've got that wrong, I've no idea about mechanics!), but as those of you in the know will know, if the engine has been starved of oil then there's far more that could/should need replacing which is why when people are landed in this situation they just change the engine. WMS don't want to know about that, they will only agree to pay to fix the faulty parts and nothing else. They also insist that they send an engineer out to confirm that the crank has gone and to do this they would want to physically see it, my mechanic told them that it would take hours to strip the car down to that state but WMS are only prepared to pay 1 hours labour for diagnostics.
Sooooo, I'm left in a bit of a schitty situation all round. To my understanding (someone correct me if I'm wrong, just trying to get my head around where I stand!) If I want to use the warranty, I'll have to pay to have the engine stripped, apart from the 1 hours labour that WMS will pay (this will mean leaving the car engine-less on the garages ramp for an unknown amount of time) just so that I can prove what's gone wrong, and then even at that point WMS will only pay to fix that issue leaving me to either pay to have the rest of the engine replaced/fixed. According to the garage (and most on here from what I can gather) there's just no point in doing any of that, the car needs a new engine. So basically, there's no point involving the warranty company because all that will mean is that I end up paying to have the engine stripped for no other reason other than to show WMS what's wrong with it.
A new engine from LR is £9800 plus VAT. A reconditioned engine is £6000. A second hand engine from Ebay is £3500 including fitting. Fitting an engine is £1500, regardless of where it's from.
The car was bought from an independent dealer who serviced it before I bought it, so it's not from an LR franchise and although it has a FSH and the last service was carried out at a main dealer, it's not a full LR history.
This type of option obviously looks tempting - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-2010-Land-R...SwyLlXpLzO - all those new parts etc, at £3.5k fitted with a 6 month warranty, seems a bit of a bargain really. Does anyone here know of a reputable company who offer this option?
Any suggestions as to which way forward is best, I'm all ears. I'd love to think that LR would help, but I'm doubtfull. I'm thinking of ringing my local dealer and asking if they have any used D4's that they would accept my D4 in part-ex for, but I'm not hopeful that they'd give me anywhere near a good price for it.

If I was to contact LR to ask for a contribution (due to the fact the car's done just 80k and was serviced in August at a main dealer), who/where do I contact? do I just go to my local dealer?

You could maybe start with the LR customer services Rep on here. Amelia is it?
Sorry you're having such bad luck. Is there no arguing to be had with the warranty company? Their response seems unreasonable considering what the manufacturer recommends?
Also do you much about the reconditioned engine option? I thought it wasn't possible to recon the Sd/Tdv6?
I have seen on here that people speak to Eurojag for a decent used engine which might be an option, and get it shipped to your local garage? I think Disco Mikey might also have another supplier, so maybe worth a PM?

I don't know much about any of it tbh, like I say I'm in no way mechanically minded, I just searched on Ebay for engines and saw adverts from companies like the one I linked to, with a 6 month warranty at £3.5k fitted it seems like a no brainer when compared with having to shell out £13.5k on a new one from LR, obviously I'd rather a new one but simply put, I can't afford to spend £13.5k on a car that is worth perhaps £21k.

Can you raise the fact that a qualified engineer dismissed your concerns when you asked about preventive maintenance?Dave

Be very, very wary about cheap rebuild offers. It usually ends badly.

If it's a car you see yourself keeping for a long time, I'd go down the route of a 2nd hand replacement or factory recon with 2 year warranty
If you want it fixed and sold on as quick as possible, spent the £3.5k and get rid on eBay...My D3 Build Thread

I don't see myself keeping it, I did before this happened but it's obviously turned things a bit sour.
Has anyone here used one of those ebay engine companies? I'd appreciate any feedback.

I agree. Financially, it's the cheapest way out of a hole for the existing forum member.
Morally, I wouldn't like to say...
Plenty of places have good eBay feedback, but none of this can be traced or investigated.
I have heard of many stories from the "engine engineering" place up this way. Seems to be Plenty of good eBay feedback from fitting T/SDV6 engines, but when offered some core units, they said they don't deal with these engines...My D3 Build Thread

If its £3500 for Dodgy Dave the spanner monkey to 'fix' it, why not spend the extra £1500 or so to get it done properly by specilaists on here and keep it ?New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

I might be wrong, and happy to be corrected, but I thought the figures were roughly £3 - £3.5k for a Eurojag engine and about £1.5k to change the ancillaries and refit.
I'm sure someone will be along to verify / correct. However, have you actually asked Disco Mikey or Woody32 (Taunton) for a price?New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
