Is it advisable to fit new tyres to one axle only? What about if you have one irreparable tyre after a puncture and have used and old on the same axle? Can modern cars cope with the varying diameters?

Always best to follow the advice in your car's user manual as this is what you'll be referring to in a battle with LR in the event of a diff failure.

Having said that, it's a bad idea to mix tread depths across an axle. Best change them both for new. Ideally, if you've got a new spare, use that as the second tyre and then keep the good part worn one as your new spare. A part worn spare is has a chance of being a better match across an axle the next time it happens. Alternatively, hang on to the part worn tyre and it might be a good match on another ocassion. I've got one tyre with 4-5mm of tread stored in the garage on that basis already.

Yes.

Either fit pair of new (as above) or use a retained part-worn of the same make.

No.

I must add that you can get tremendous difference between new tyre circumferences of the same published size but of different makes. The D3 and D4 are both particularly intolerant of such differences.
