SDV6 diesel engine failure

I have a 2012 Feb built Discovery 4 SDV6 that ran beautifully for the past 4 years until it suddenly lost power while cruising uphill on a 60mph motorway, needless to say I was really lucky that I made immediate decision to pull the vehicle over to the side as soon as I felt the loss in power, as by the time I got there the car shut down completely and cannot be restarted again.

The dealer disassembled the engine and determined the crankshaft sleeve had failed and caused the engine to seize up, a complete new engine is needed as they do not repair engine in Taiwan. A quick check on the internet revealed that there are a few cases like mine all had failed sleeve or around that area of some sort due to factory part defect or assembly error.

Dealer has asked me to foot the bill of the new engine but I am not going down without a fight, it is unacceptable to me for a diesel engine to fail just after 4 years 120,000km or around 75,000mi, as I have had 10 cars in the past 20 years and none of them had an engine failure, let alone luxury vehicle like this. They have completely ignored my request to share any cost of the repair, I plan to take this to court with them but need some help with concrete evidence that this is happening around the world and being acknowledged by creditable media sources.

If you have experience in this situation that might help and/or creditable sources/records for acknowledging this engine failure can you please share them with me at thomas@pinkpac.com, I appreciate this in advance.

Lastly happy motoring with your baby and hope they all run beautifully like mine had been, before the breakdown that is... Rolling Eyes

JLR will replace an engine with crank related issues provided that you meet their criteria e.g. have had it serviced as per the spec.

Take it up via PM with Amelia http://www.disco4.com/forum/member-liam-landrover.html

DG - probably been asked before - but does that include servicing outside of a main dealer? - i.e. at an indy?

It is best to clarify with LR tbh ...non-dealer service within warranty might be acceptable due to the legal status but you would have to have all i's dotted and t's crossed in paperwork terms...servicing outside of the warranty period is where it could get sticky as LR can stipulate their own criteria to suit.

Thanks DG, PM sent to the link you provided.

Hopefully I can get as much information on this as I can to have a firm ground in getting the engine sorted.

Update:

The dealer is still not willing to cover the cost of the engine replacement. I am due to meet up with them next week, does any one have valid cases of similar failure on SDV6 engine that I can present to the dealer to prove I am not the isolated case? I would really appreciate it if anyone can shed some light on this, thanks.

I believe that you should take this up direct with LR Customer Services - not the dealer.

United Kingdom 2010 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 HSE Auto Nara BronzeDiscovery 4

Hi lm5370

I hope you have more luck than I did with JLR, my engine completely seized leaving my wife stranded on a dangerous slip road and LR couldn't have cared less.

I sent my Discovery to a main dealer near me, they confirmed it as seized due to crank failure and presented me with a quote for around £20,000 Rolling with laughter . I went to a department they call customer relations, not sure why they're called that, they offered a 20% 'goodwill' gesture off the RETAIL cost of the repair, leaving a bill for greater value than the car was worth. I tried to challenge them but the customer relations bod just kept giving me the same line when I called them, their email correspondence was shocking sending me messages which were just copy paste standard responses that they couldn't even be bothered to edit so the entire message was in the same font.

I challenged it as much as I could but they would not budge, even the dealership tried to assist by going to the head of customer relations to no avail. I did lodge a complaint with motor codes, the motor industry ombudsman, but they had a 5 week backlog before they contacted me by which time I had sold the car as a non-runner at huge loss.

I still cannot get over the fact that this is a known fault to which Land Rover have taken no responsibility for, even profiting twice from vehicles they have sold with manufacturing faults. The only time you will have any piece of mind would be if your vehicle is under warranty, which mine wasn't.

The most worrying is that LR appear to have done nothing to mitigate the problem as it is happening to new vehicles also, at my place of work in addition to my vehicle 2 of my colleagues have suffered TDV6 engine failure with one of the vehicle being 18 months old and having 12,000 miles on the clock.

Needless to say I shall never purchase and try my best not to travel in another JLR product for as long as I'm alive, I will also regale my story to anyone who listens to me in the hope that I affect their sales by even 1 vehicle. Considering I have owned nothing but Discovery's for the last 15 years it's a sad end to my loyalty to the brand.

I too have experienced the same issues with Landrover customer services as Charlie610, my case handler tells blatant lies and clearly couldn't care less, I've had Landrovers for 15 years but this will be my last.

I will when I get the time be writing a blog with all the emails exchanged and timeline of events to allow people to make an informed decision when paying for what is thought of as a premium brand. Luckily we are just in the process of replacing our second car which would have been a discovery sport but will no longer be a Landrover. The engines leave a lot to be desired making the vehicles disposable at anything form 75k miles onwards.

Naks: thanks I will take part in the survey. Do you have any dealer paper acknowledging the problem? I am due to speak with the dealer again and any cases I can pick up that's official will really help.

NJSS: I called up the customer relation service here in Taiwan and I never heard back from them. My friend in the motoring press said I need to have proof of several incidents around the world before I can make my case valid, I am still trying to do this but it is difficult that if I print out copies of website forum discussion.

Charlies610, Jaggz: Thanks for sharing your experience and really sorry to hear the outcome was not what you have hoped. Going through the same situation now makes me finally understand the frustration these people go through. I also rented a new XF when I was touring in Europe with the same diesel engine I am trying really trying to find a good excuse to get another JLR product, but if I get another one I am simply stupid by the look of things now.

I am due to have a serious conversation with my dealer, if anyone has any official papers acknowledging the problem or the transcript of the dealings you have with the dealer it will really help to make my case. Thanks all.
