Hello folks,
I'm interested in installing a VHF radio in my wifes' D4 (and also in my 90) for use with our local 4x4 response network. I know nothing about them though (although have had CB's for years) and wondered if anybody had any experience or kit recommendations?
Also, any tips on discreet installation in a D4, ideally without drilling any holes?
Thanks in advance. Darren

I have a VHF radio installed on our boat and seem to remember a warning to the guys who had handheld VHF radios that when the step onto shore they must not use the radio on land, it is only for use ' off shore'.
I presumed that this was the case for all VHF.

I have had to register the radio as a ship station.
I presume to use it legally on land you would need a Base station similar to the Coastguard.
There is a £5000 for illegal use.
I have to carry the licence on board at all times as it can be inspected at any time.
You also have to have completed the SRC course to allow you to operate the radio.

I don't know the details, but our response group apparently have the use of a group licence for this type.
I believe they're also the same type as used by taxi's, albeit reprogrammed to a different frequency. Darren

That's a marine VHF, uses the frequencies allocated for Marine use. Line of sight only and teh warnings about land based use are valid.
OP would be better with a 446MHz PMR system, eg

As I say, I don't know the details, but the system in use has been described to me as 25w VHF and is run on a group licence. It's nothing to do with PMR.
I must admit, I'd assumed it would be a reasonably well known arrangement, but possibly not I'll have to get a few more details from within the group. Darren

It is probably a group PMR license if 25w
From 4x4 response web site
No. 3 Equipment Carried
It is recommended that all vehicles have the following minimum equipment
Radio transceiver. CB, PMR or other radio transceiver on compatible frequency with other deployed vehicles. This should be an independent form of communication i.e. does not rely upon an external network.

Are you sure it's VHF and not UHF? UHF are a step up from PMR and you require a licence for them (group licensing is common) Mitex General are a good example Mark

Dunno. I've definitely been told VHF but, as I say, I'll have to get some more details. Darren

Basically as an individual your choice is CB or take an exam and get a licence from Ofcom.
A group like 4x4 response can get a licence for PMR to use within the group but as an individual your choice is as above. There are three levels- Foundation, Intermediate or Advanced with increasing complexity and difficulty. Foundation is quite simple and just needs a day's course and allows you to transmit with 10w but at the other end of the scale the Advanced is electronics degree level but you can then use 400w. The levels of licence also allow different frequency bands but all levels can use VHF and UHF.
Good luck. Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done

yes it will be VHF, theres specific bandwidth for marine use, theres thousands of commercial VHF users in the UK all on various offcom licences, 4x4 response uk has a general offcom licence for PBR vhf use...

I've got HF/VHF/UHF (10m/6m/2m/70cm) and a 4m (Low band VHF) MSA radio in my 4x4 Sprinter, I'm going to be putting similar radios in my D4 when it arrives.
I've got a licence for the MSA radio with the MSA and Ofcom and I'm a registered radio amateur for the use of the other radios.
As long as the organisation you are using the radio with is licensed or you are qualified then you can use it on land.
We can only use the radio off shore if we are full RSGB/Ofcom licence holders, I'm only an intermediate at the moment.
