Ireland 2008 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Java BlackDiscovery 3

We've been doing Dublin -> Castellina in Chianti (Tuscany) for the last number of years and have tried an number of routes but have settled on the following:

1. Thursday morning Fast Ferry from Dublin to Holyhead (arriving approx. 11:00) then drive to Holiday Inn @ the channel tunnel to spend the night.
2. Friday morning 08:00 Channel Tunnel and then drive to Chamonix (avoiding Paris and Lyon) for dinner and spend the night in a hotel
3. Saturday morning up early and thru the Mont Blanc tunnel @ 06:00 before the traffic builds up and drive down via Genoa arriving in Castellina for lunch Smile

On the way back I do the Castellina to Coquelles in one go, takes about 14 hours including stops.

Never had any real issues and even after 14 hours I still step out of the Disco feeling relatively fresh

TBH I've used the tunnel for 22 years and been held up once for an hour. I use it at least twice a year if not three or four times a year and use Tesco vouchers for the past 3/4 years as you get 3 x the value to £. So a trip to take a car and caravan in high season is about £360 - £370 return, I use the vouchers so £120 of vouchers plus about a tenner in cash. I arrive about 40 mins before leaving, ten mins before the gate closes and usually drive straight on, the crossing is 35 mins and your driving in France. Stay at the Black Horse site in Folkestone which is a 5 min drive from the tunnel the night before going.
Coming home I stay at camping Erables in Coquelles with Old Bernard Bouteroy. Lovely old guy and again just minutes from the tunnel.

We have booked once & it was closed for hours.....chaos
If you have a holiday you don't want to be enduring chaos

Same time all ferries operational....simple transaction
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Thanks everyone.

We will be in the D4 no caravan! Hoping to find a good hotel in the overnight stops.
I'll have to get out a good road map and pin the main points and try and sort out your suggested route between.
The journey is to be a relaxed trip, so if we see something worth stopping for, we will!

Someone suggested the Michelin road atlas with green tourist routes marked, anyone tried the green routes?

Anyone use electronic maps in Europe?

I have all the GB OS maps on the Ipad and use them both on and off road so much, a European version would be useful, any suggestions?

Slightly off-topic, but there are various mentions of passing Reims...

If you are into your Champagne, you could do far worse than take a brief detour into Verzy which is just south of Reims, calling into Champagne Jean-Paul DeVille.

Speak to Marie-Alice (perfect English, so no pointing and miming) and you get Grand Cru Champagne for around 16-17 Euros a bottle and a variety of options from Blanc de Blancs through to Prestige.

I have no involvement but will say that we picked up a fair few bottles last time we were there.

Google them (or PM me) for contact details - their website is all in French but the service is exceptional!
