Economy Disco 4 TD vs Disco 3 TD |
|
How much more economical is the Disco 4 TD vs the Disco 3 in the REAL WORLD ? As a long standing owner of Disco 3,our plan is to upgrade to used Disco 4 when several hundred thousand arrive on the market as people upgrade to the Disco 5 next year ?

My experience is that my current 2016 D4 is 15-20% more economical than my 2005 D3 auto. Between 2005 and 2008 I covered just over 30k and averaged 26.9mpg, in my current D4 I've only covered just under 5k but have averaged 31.4mpg.
I probably do less motorway travel than in the D3 and probably drive a little more economically than I did in the D3. All figures are based upon actual fuel put in and miles covered - the computer is ipusually optermistic in the values it displays Disco 4 Landmark

I don't think there is much in it.
My D3 shows 30 on the dash and my new D4 is showing 29 after doing 6k.
The D4 might improve a bit after it's done a few more miles. D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.
I only work so I can afford to repair my Land Rovers!

Although not the major factor, but when you do 25-30,000+ miles a year then a few extra mpg can make a major saving.

On 25k per year, the difference between 28 to 30 mpg should be about £350 per year. Probably smaller than the difference between chunky tyres, a roof rack or driving with a window open!

Consistantly 10% better (about 3mpg) over a number of D4's doing 20-30k per annum

Would say at least 10%.
150 mile regular journey used to chew through almost half a tank in the D3, did that and another 50 mile round trip to get to the same level at the weekend. Was on cruise control tho.
Funny thing was - totally brimmed the tank and did 75 miles without the needle moving!!

Ok thks guys, I don't see the point then of switching to a Disco 4, when the endgame is a 1 year old Disco 5, even if it doesn't have a split rear tailgate

I could never get more than 31mpg real world out of my D3 2.7 but I have genuinely had almost up to 45mpg from the D4 3.0 TDv6 (2010 My) but it averages 26-32 from tank to tank (driving like a priest circa 50mph).
I use Shell v-power but I doubt thats making much difference and I've also Terra-cleaned the D4 too. _______________________
