New member - looking to buy tomorrow!

Hi - great forum, hoping to be an active member soon!

Wonder if people could help with advice. Always wanted a Disovery and needing one now as I have a 3rd child on the way and after a lot of research it seems the Disco is one of the few decent cars that can accomodate 3 seats side by side. Just sold my 2003 Audi RS6 Avant at the weekend, and using the money to buy this. I am hoping to buy my first Disco 3 tomorrow, but wonder if anyone has views on the car I am going to see, as I have a couple of doubts.

Link below.
http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ad...amp;page=1

Firstly, does the fact this car have things like spotlights, headlamp protectors and a sort of undercarriage plate, mean that the car has been off road, or is more likely to have been off road. And is this necessarily a problem? I dont really like the spot lights and would probably remove them after buying.
Secondly, the advert talks about an 'upgraded dash' but this looks like a bit of a stick on thing to me. I wonder if this is actually a negative, and how easy it would be for me to remove this. In one of the last pictures the fit of the upgraded dash looks a bit rubbish.
Lastly - EGR valves blanked off? Good or bad thing?

Any thoughts would be gratefully received!

Many thanks!
Jonno

"Part service history" would be enough to deter me. Oh, and that "upgraded" dash. Rolling Eyes

Move along to the next one... Whistle

^^^ +1

You need a FSH. (Mileage is less important.)

EGR blanked off - a lot on here do it. Seems to be beneficial at that age/stage.

Many thanks guys. I think he does have a lot of receipts apparently from day 1, but the service book has not been stamped, when I asked about the part history.

I am quite focused on one with less than 80k miles, but there are a huge amount for sale with far greater mileages than this. So maybe thats less of a problem than with other cars?

Cheers

Cooling seats?

FSH essential - at that age would need belts being done, suspension bushes etc. - proceed with extreme caution

If it has been properly looked after high mileage needn't be a problem.

There's lots of info on here about what to check, if you search around.

I am not sure how important a full service history is on an 11 year old car. Personally I think you are correct to look for lower mileage. Having said that, these cars seem to be very hard on suspension bushes, expect them to be quite worn on an 80,000 mile car, if they are original.
I am new to Discovery ownership, (March this year), so not an expert by any means. One thing that has surprised me about our 57 plate 70,000 mile D3 is how much surface rust there is underneath and on the suspension components. Take a close look before you buy.
Despite all it's actual and potential issues the D3 is fast becoming one of my favourite cars.
Finally, this forum is brilliant, so listen to what the experienced owners and specialists on here have to say.
Good luck. Thumbs Up
 Simon.

I bought mine with a comprehensive history not full but it did have all the receipts for everything that has been spent on it. When I sell the history will be even worse as I will service it myself and unless i need a ramp or the body gets taken off i will repair myself just keep the receipts for the parts. So considering that a lot of members on here do there own work is it really essential ?

Why less than 80k? If you look at the mileage chart on here many go to 200k with regular maintenance.

+1 for me also full service is a must. Mine has 128k on it and it has FSH, 2 gear box flushes, 5 diff oil changes and 11 stamps in the book.

There will always be another, it could be a v8 Whistle

+1 for the FSH. I bought my first one without much of a history and ended up spending a lot of money on it for things that should have been maintained. However I would advise going and looking at it and driving it. I was a bit reckless and bought the first one I saw simply based on Autotrader searches and eventually had to get rid as it had gearbox problems that would have cost a fortune. I learned from that and am really happy with my current car as a result.

I would line up viewings on any that are near you regardless of mileage and go and see at least 3. That way you can get to know the feel of the cars with different mileages before you settle on one.

Really, really don't buy the first you see unless you know what you are looking at; it would be cheaper to hire a cheap car for a few weeks whilst you are looking than buy a car that costs you £000's in repairs.

If I were you I would set a price and buy a trusted forum member's car that has FSH as well as the usual extras nearly all of us do. Good luck - it is still my favourite car of all time, however they are more of a 'hobby' than a car that you leave alone and do nothing with!

It seems to have a make of tyres i have never heard of. Maybe that suggests its been run on a budget, however as with buying any used car, its all really guesswork.

Go with your gut.

This one does look like a very nice example and is still has a WD warranty on it.

Dont get hung up on the 55/06 tax difference, 06 monthly is 43 quid so about 15 gbp more than the cheaper one, basically irrelevant.

I wouldnt have thought its seen much off road with them tyres.

Lots of people like to fit the off road gear for looks alone.
