Wow. Thanks for all the great advice guys, really appreciate this. It's invaluable. I spent a lot of time on the RS246 forum with my precious car but don't remember as much helpful advice to a newbie. I've knocked that one on the head, and will search for another. Good advice about trying a few before buying. Regards mileage i agree a good history is key maybe over just looking at the mileage. Maybe it's also something psychological about spending £10k on a car with 100k plus miles. I come from owning an Audi RS6 which are amazing cars but just about a big a potential money pit as you can get and high running costs so am hoping a decent disco will be slightly less so.
I looked at other cars online that could suit my needs and ford SMAX seems to be the sensible boring choice but doesn't really interest me. I did come across a jeep commander which I'd never really seen before but looked a bit like a poor version of a disco. To date I've never driven on. I'd really like the disco 4 with the 3.0 engine but can't stretch to that. I see plenty of d3s flying past me on the motorways so am guessing the 2.7 pulls well enough. With 3 kids I'm not likely to be hammering things much.

I wanted a 70 - 80k miles D3 just like you. In fact it has turned out to be the exact mileage to avoid. The car seems to have a mid-life crisis at just this point.
Either go much lower miles (and expensive ) or go to about 110,000. By then the engine belts will have been done, the suspension bushes will have been renewed, the rear prop will be new, the wheel bearings replaced, the diff bearings replaced etc.etc.
But they are great cars

Very interesting point, can see what you mean. I might have another look at cars with a higher mileage. It was just something psychological about spending £10k odd and getting something with 100k on the clock. Its more about what I would get for it in 2-3 years with 140k on it. But defintiely worth thinking about, ill take a look now, thanks!

Don't get wrapped up in mileage. How its been looked after is more important. These beasties are better used. Short trips and low mileage is any cars worst enemy. D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

Thats roughly 60p per day difference thats not even a cheap cup of coffee.
Now bear in mind these arent cheap cars to buy and especially run i would still say the tax difference is irrelevant compared to all the the other things that can go wrong.

I think over the last 5/10 years peoples attitude to high milers has changed significantly.
It wasnt that many years ago if a car made 100k it was considered amazing and even if the engine made 100k the rest of the car had all but rotted away.
As the D3 ages more and the prices drop more L/R enthusiasts will come into the fold, they wont really have much choice as the D1s have all but rotted away and the D2 wont be far behind!

There are lots of cars available to buy some will be good and some bad . What you will find is that the majority of forum cars that come up for sale will be fine examples and very well cared for and certainly worth consideration . You're not afraid of the dark are you ?
