Have LR really thought about this one-piece tailgate?

I mean... All the moans so far all revolve around the lack of the drop down part of the tailgate, but have they really thought about this...

I parked a little close to a bollard today, meaning I couldn't drop the lower tailgate when putting shopping in the boot (yep, purgatory does happen from time to time...), resulting in my shin inadvertently meeting the towbar with some force!

Oh my sainted aunt! Pain like I haven't experienced since I fell off a tail-lift (whole different story...) but something that I think D5 owners may come to know at first hand time after time...

Ouch to the power of gazillions...

Was it enough pain to make you buy the electric fold out towbar? If yes, then Land Rover have thought it through Laughing

If you parked too close to the bollard to open the lower tailgate, can I assume that you wouldn't have been able to open the tailgate at all on new thing?

Good points so far...

A). Maybe it's an evolutionary thing that gradually less and less people will expect / want towbars on a D5 and the whole thing will morph into a non-utility vehicle with anyone who wants to tow opting for L663 (as, if and when...)

B) Maybe Disco 5(b) will have regressed to a drop down window within the rear section, in the style of a Freelander 1.

Progress - it's a beautiful thing

So coming back to the failure of the D5 to have a split tail gate. At least if you do injure yourself, the split tail gate gives you somewhere to sit and apply plasters, bandages, make a calming brew or for the family to perch and laugh as you writh around the floor in agony. Laughing

No, LR have got the D5 wrong.

I just see it as an opportunity for someone to come up with an after-market "proper tailgate".

We rarely drop the lower tailgate when putting the shopping in and have yet to suffer any collisions with the tow bar.

I can't see what all the fuss is about tbh.
I see the lower tailgate on the 3/4 as something that stops me reaching the far boot area, I never really sit on it and find it far more of a hinderance than a help. It's in the way when hitching up so has to be shut which means you have to put everything in the boot (hitchlock, towbar etc) or on the floor. If it was a one piece tailgate it could sit in the boot and I wouldn't have to get up to reach stuff. Makes loads of sense to me. I don't keep horses so perhaps I don't see the point (to point). The flap in the D5 seems just as good a seat as was the lower tailgate did anyhow so still don't see the problem.
But what do I know? I'm off to see the D5 on Friday at Woodford, maybe I'll know better then.

The thing is that if you shave off a few inches from the tailgate, you can reach into the boot a few inches further - which might represent say 10% of the length - but for those who want to use the tailgate, those few inches represent say 50% of the tailgate gone, so it's a little more boot access for much less tailgate, and when it comes to roof access, the ability has gone entirely - no doubt part of McGovern's plan to deter roof rack use!
