Nice to visit and look around, but do you really want to live in one?

Agree, for it's time the D3 was the best (even over the D4).

Having near enough lived out of mine for a few days I was more than happy with it other than small lip between the back seats and boot floor making me need an air mattress Smile

It's done laning and plenty off rescue work up woodhead and snake pass in bad weather.
Yes the headroom isn't as high as a D3/4 and the boot is the same height and depth wise but then I don't often pack it up that much and even then still managed to get a cube of chopped wood in the back without issue. After looking at one or two d3's a few years ago I took a local specialists recommendation and looked at the ff and haven't looked back Smile

Yes I've spent a good while in a disco, 12k/3months in a d4, then short term ones for a week or two when needed and even an ssrr for a few days till it popped

In honesty I regret buying an RRS over one, it was a case of I'd looked at a few that were unfortunately dogs and a decent looking RRS came up.
I've had a FFRR previously and while I think the interior is nicer in one and they both have the same off roading and towing ability the Disco does just seem a more versatile car, size, seats etc I can see the appeal.

I drive past a garage selling second hand cars four times a day. For a few weeks there's been a really nice looking 2008 RRS which I've been lovingly glancing at. However, this thread has truly been the inspiration for me to keep loving my eleven year old D3

I do like my RRS. It's been a pain on the proverbial on a number of occasions but that's LRs for you. I'd happily have a D4 because of the practicality brought by the cave behind the front seats: my RRS gets used as a van at times but it's much smaller of course. When I've driven a D4 I've been happy with it. I like the idea of a FFRR too - especially the 4.4TDV8. Haven't driven one yet though.

I think I'd be happy with any of the three to be honest. All different with their own +ve and -ve points. None does everything perfectly but all are entirely useable.

Its been a while so just a quick update.

Since i sold my d3 I've missed it immensely. Id done everything to it and to my eyes it was perfect, but my search for better found me making a big mistake.

I have since owned a d4, very briefly and a ffrr with i never liked from day 1. I then brought a mondeo and I'm now in a rr evoque.

Evo is a good car but i still miss the d3 of all the cars I've owned it was the best all round car.

I don't want another one, i want my one, if that makes sense.

So moral of the story, the grass isn't always greener on the other side and an upgrade isn't always an upgrade.

United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Tonga GreenDiscovery 3

Took delivery of a new D3 Tonga Green SE on 20 December 2004, partly because of the need for 6 seats for small family...

They are all driving now; only 1 still living at home...

It has been all over Western Europe, towed 803 JCB, scaled English moors, forded Scottish rivers...

and...

I've still got it 8)

France 2009 Discovery 4 TDV6 SE Manual Buckingham BlueDiscovery 4

Beloved 2010 MY 2009 D4 (2.7 Manual LHD - and yes, I do love it! Smile at the garage after non switch off solvable Reduced Performance, Stability and emg Braking X-mas lights - dash display..... seems like corroded connector issue on module behind battery. Other than that - another pair of Scorpion ATR's eaten within 10K miles, and now lower suspension arm bushes failing - and all that after super duper major 7 year twin belts service - at less than 80K miles I hasten to add!!!!!!!
Unfortunately I rely on my car for work, and reliability issues now outweigh D4 passion - if you don't need a LR, don't buy one!
Sadly, here on the giant Lily Pad - France, finding a good LR dealer - no hope, finding a good independent - no hope either! My nearest LR dealer - 2 hours away - refused to accept that there is such a thing as a 2.7 manual D4 - even told me the VIN was probably wrong Rolling with laughter Car now been with specialist for nearly 3 weeks and still no idea what to do!
Will collect D4 this week and replace lower arms myself. Error messages now fixed. Tyres will be fitted by local grease monkey. Then - for SALE!!!!!!!!
In the interim, drove past the Toyota garage on way home..... Brand new Rav4 D4-D now sat in drive - brilliant! Leased for €280/month including servicing for 3 years. Then I chuck it back at them and get a new one Mr. Green
OK, hate me.... Twisted Evil but c'mon... you know you wished you'd done the same Laughing
Will miss the D4 dreadfully, but I simply can't do the fuel, reliability and dreadfull LR support in France anymore.
