Front fog light disassembly & LED halo fitting
Morning folks,
I have tried doing a search on this but nothing has come up so am hoping that amongst the collective wealth of wisdom on this site there might be someone who has done what I am planning (hoping) to do?
I have a 2010 D4 and want to add halo LED daytime running lights into the front fog lights. I have sourced a decent pair of second hand fog lights off the net and have just tried the hair dryer trick to try and soften the adhesive so I can remove the lens from the plastic body - alas it did not work...
Before I resort to a slightly less refined approach to removing the glass...
Has anyone done this before and/or got any suggestions/tips/tricks they can pass on please?
Cheers.D4 - Stornoway Grey

So over 100 views and no-one who has taken the fog lights apart so I set to and used trial and error - it seems the lenses are held in place with something similar to, if not, windscreen sealant.
It wasn't easy as the sealant is pretty strong stuff and sticks 3 different parts together but with use of a scalpel blade and a Heidemann Spatula I got the glass out and was able to remove the inner plastic shield and clean everything up.
Measured the inside diameter of the inner plastic shield and ordered a pair of 70mm diameter LED halo rings that will sit inside the front of the inner shield.
Now waiting for the halo rings to arrive from China before next stage of gluing them in and reassembling the units.
While I'm waiting for the halo rings I need to decide whether to buy a DRL controller or try to figure a way of doing it with relays - I don't want the DRLs to flash with the indicators and want them to switch off rather than dim when the side/head lights come on so don't need any fancy module.
Thinking of running the trigger feed from the fuel pump as this seems to be a common thing to do from searching other forums, or should I just stick to using the live wire in the plug in front of the radiator?
Once I have all the bits I will take some photos as I put it all together and will post them in case anyone else wants to give this a try D4 - Stornoway Grey

Been a while since I did mine but I used the 'Japan' connector at the radiator but I think the Halo rings were 80mm? There is defo a post on here as I followed it, I'll have a rake..

Thanks Biffysun, had seen that thread but it's for a D3 which is a completely different lamp unit to the D4. All will become clear as and when I have the halo rings and can take some photos but basically on D4 lamps there is the main plastic housing which fixes into the car and houses the reflector then inside the front of that is a plastic shield with a flange which is located on a shoulder with pegs and then the glass goes on the front of the main housing. The sealant is put on the outer side of the flange of the shield and when the glass is pushed into place it forces the sealant out to fill gaps and all is fixed.
Am still looking for a heads up on the relay arrangement that people have mentioned on here - I'm guessing a 4 pin relay for the trigger feed from the "Japan" connector with live feed from the battery then going into a 5 pin relay through the NC side and with a trigger feed from the side lights to switch the relay from closed to open and break the feed to the DRL??D4 - Stornoway Grey

Didn't read that you had the D4, I take it you are putting the halos' into the headlamp unit? or the D4 fog lights? (not had either apart I'm afraid) I used a cheapo relay set up from ebay and AFAIR used a feed from the sidelight to switch 'off' the relay that is 'switched' by the Japan connector to feed the DRLs, the 'unit' is basically another relay but I think mine had a switch to override, ie pos1 engine on, DRLs on all time and pos2 engine on, DRLs on but side lights on extinguishes the DRLs (preferred) hope this helps as I can't find my ebay purchase history that far back

BEFORE
So here are a few photos of the front fog lights as fitted to my D4, as you can see they are a little fogged up themselves on the inside of the glass so could do with a clean anyway.
As well as the fogging I have noticed a potential problem with my cunning plan and it is not that I do not have a turnip either...
Looking at the middle photo above you can see that the lamp is not concentric in the hole in the trim and that there is a gap at the bottom of the lamp and it is behind the trim at the top - looks like I may need to do a little bit of 'adjustment' and open the holes out on the lamp brackets so I can drop them down a bit to make sure the halo ring is visible all the way round. Oh well, it is a Land Rover I suppose and I should be used to their approach to tolerances and trim fit by now after over 25 years of owning vehicles with a green oval on the front.
After thinking about the potential pitfalls of taking my existing lights out - not having fog lights fitted until I have done the mod and also the potential to break them whilst pulling them apart, I decided to source a second hand set from the Bay of E.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, these were not easy to get apart but the photos below show the three main component parts.
Lens unit
Main housing with reflector
Inner plastic shield
Which fits into the main housing
The front edge of the inner plastic shield has a taper on it and the ID increases to the front from about 68mm to 73mm so a 70mm OD halo ring will sit back inside the shield and can be glued in place.
That's about all the info I can give at this stage as I have to wait for the LED halo rings to arrive before I can look at how and where to route the cables from them so they don't foul the reflector or adjuster in the lamp unit - I am thinking I may be able to get them past the reflector and down to the back of the case by the vent/filter (the blue cap on the back), if not then they may have to come out of the side.
Anyway for now "That's all Folks!"D4 - Stornoway Grey

The Next Stage
Well, the LED halo rings arrived from China a month earlier than expected and I had a few minutes spare between jobs this morning so I decided to do a trial fit in the inner collector ring. Thing is I couldn't resist doing a bit more than a trial fit so ended up fitting one of the halo rings into one of the lamp units
Having got the ring in equally all round (6mm from the top edge) I scribed the collector ring around the underside, removed the ring and then drilled a number of holes through just above the scribe line.
The LED ring was then replaced and gel super glue dripped through each hole to glue the outside edge of the LED PCB to the collector ring.
Two holes were drilled through the collector ring to allow the wires for the LED to pass through so they are on the outside of the collector and can be fed down between the lamp casing and the reflector at the point where the breather is on the back of the casing.
The blue breather cap was then removed and two more holes drilled up through the casing so the LED wires could be fed out of the case - these holes will be sealed once I have made sure everything is working properly.
The wires will then have to be re-soldered to the wires coming out of the potted diode(?) and suitable connectors will also be added (Durite) to enable the LEDs to be connected to the feed and earth.
I've only had time to do one halo so far but with a dry fit of the lens I think it's looking good so far?!

Sorry, I haven't had time to look at the under bonnet stuff yet but both lamps now have halo LEDs fitted & are waiting to be sealed back up again.
