Sorry, just realised there was a video to play..
The good news for you is mine sounded much louder than this. Hopefully your engine is ok..
Might be worth doing the check that the main dealer did on mine to diagnose the fault. I was
Amazed to learn that it's to cut the oil filter open and look for metal..
If only that (quick ?) check was routine at main servicing, maybe the fault (on mine and other
Affected engines, using VIN info) would have been detected whilst the vehicle was still in the
warranty period..
Or, is that too simplistic a view..?

It is acknowledged by LR that the cranks can fail ...there is a TSB action notice which has been out for a while. What cannot be determined is when or if it's going to happen and to which engines ...there is no defined batch though it affects more 2.7 than 3.0 engines. If you meet the criteria then LR will assist even outside of warranty. Do a search on the site as there are a number of threads on the subject.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

This thread and the consistency of the terrible nature ofthe failure and resulting costs versus the hit and miss possibility of which vehicle is very concerning and making me feel I should get out of the D4 club and get a van if im honest.

Try to keep things in perspective, I've been a member of a number of forums for a number of different vehicles over the last 15 years and every one of them have a similar 'common fault' that happens to a few people and then the paranoia starts to grow, the reality is that there are thousands of these vehicles that don't suffer with 'the dreaded' issue but obviously you don't hear about those!

That may be so Robert but if this were so rare in comparison to the number of D4s going about their business in a reliable way then I would be hard pressed to come across another with the same issue other than on forums such as this.
In reality I have a friend whose D4 failed in the same way around 5 weeks before mine, interestingly another MY10 which seems to be the model year of the majority of the D4 crank failures I have seen.
Also when his failed I was relieved as I thought it would be less likely for mine to fail..........WRONG!

Its not a bigger problem than the TDV6 ...changes were made in production ...but nevertheless it hasn't been eradicated totally. It's "1 in a hundred" a numbers game as has been discussed many times before.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

15/16 MY FFRR engines will be Ford engines, same as TDV6 and the Petrol V6 - the whole reason JLR is now building their own engine.Disco 5 HSE Lux

I just purchased D3 (2008, 72000 miles) and I'm bit scared by this issue. D3 is quite an investment.
For now I'm covered by seller warranty for "hidden problems" but it will eventually run out...
What preemptive maintenance can one do?
Previous owners did oil changes less frequently than I like but not too bad (10000-12000 miles), I'll switch to 7500.
Preventive oil pump replacement?
Is it possible/beneficial to have the crank shaft bearings replaced at some point?
Can the crank be replaced?
I have access to relatively cheap but qualified mechanics (work hour cost is less of an issue than i.e. in UK) so if there's good preventive maintenance, I would consider it when warranty runs out, with the goal of using the car till ca. 150k miles.
