Mine does this, and always has.
The good news is that it is no worse at 90000 miles than it was at 0 miles. So its not a devloping fault, just a feature of a heavy duty drive train.

Mine does this too and I have a manual gearbox. Feels like play in the drivetrain.
The defender I used to have had the same. When I told the dealer about it they told me it was normal and within LR tolerances. When I drove another defender it had the same clunk but a lot more noticeable.
The 'clunk' in the D3 is a lot less noticeable, but it has only done 35000km.
regards,
Thomas

When using command shift shifting down to 2nd gear and re-applying the power then there seems to be no problem. Could this mean that the gearbox is releasing the gear or drive when it is in auto? And why does it do this only in 2nd gear? It does not feel like it is a big problem, but the drive would be smoother if the thud was not there.....

Likewise - been like that for 3 years inc software upgrades & no change either for better or worse in that time - I always just assumed it was an annoying trait of an auto related to it "coasting out of gear" at lower speeds because of the torque convertor & then the power just coming in overly-hard. I was more concerned with the "coasting" effect as it means that there is no engine braking available at low speeds & that seems to have safety implications over a manual especially in winter/wet weather, but LR just insist this is normal

sorry the answer from the factory was that this is "a designed in measure, to ensure that drivetrain wind up doesn't occur.." in the end my leasing company took the car back as they felt it was not up to standard. Sadly I no longer drive a D3 and now drive a BMW (which uses a similar gearbox, but without the shunt..)

Not an unusual fall back excuse from LR!!! Even if there is an issue, if in doubt just claim that it is designed that way

This is a design feature to get the engine and drivetrain components to warm up more quickly in cold conditions, reducing fuel consumption and component wear. Clever eh ? There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

This Drive line shunt issue is currently occurring with my 2005 D3... Is this still an issue out there? Was it resolved?

jdea, this is a very old post, but I think you need to get your autobox oil flushed. Especially if it's not always been like it. Bodsys Brake Bible
D4/D3 Remote FBH heat kits
BAS Remaps/ EGR Blank
Transmission Flush

Thanks for your reply,
I had this problem for a while now and it has been discounted by dealers every time i raise it. I really got off with it when i went to the big smoke last week.
This post was the nearest i could find.........
I have just done a double flush which has resolved a shudder problem i had at full load and all my ECU firmware is up-to-date...
What else could i try?

Just bought a 05 auto and this does the same as described. It is an open torque converter "crossing of the rpms" issue and would have probably been possible to fix via engine and gearbox software with enough effort. Good news is its not really a durability issue but bad news is you have to buy a newer model to get a fix or at least an improvement as I suspect land rover stopped working on Eu3 software a long time ago.
