What's Your Best Low Cost Modification?
Many of us have spent lots of money on expensive mods to our Discovery's but how about listing the best low cost ones. I will start the ball rolling with mine.
Tow cover push and turn clip mod.
I can't take credit for this one as I it was suggested by another member some years ago but I can't find the original post.
This one makes it easy to remove the tow bar electrics panel without a screwdriver or a coin. It involves cutting a 25mm washer in half flattening off a action of the outside circumference and glueing it into the the slot on the push & turn clip. A quick spray with paint will make it look like original fit. The second photo below shows one which has been in use for about 5 years. Must give it a respray.
It's probably not suitable for those who do off-roading as the washer may well get knocked off.
Cubby box chiller
I couldn't justify the cost of a centre cubby box fridge and really only wanted to keep my chocolate from melting in the height of summer. This mod involves drilling a 20mm hole through the back off the cubby by into the ventilation duct which feeds the second row vents. I then fitted a 75p conduit connector to feed cold air into the cubby box. It obviously is only effective when cool air is being supplied but it's highly effective in the summer. Here is a guide on how to do this
I don't know about you but I am always loosing bits of paper which know I will need at a later date. This is just some sticky back Velcro and a bulldog clip.
Fuelling nozzle handle restrainer
I hate it when you have to stand for ages gripping a dirty diesel pump nozzle filling your tank from empty. All nozzles have a device to lock the grip handle in the refuel position but over the years, the pin which is supposed to engage with the latch has been removed from the handle (they have probably been removed by the H & S gestapo). This little tool which is stored inside the vehicles fuel filler cap does the job nicely.
I used a rivet with a shaft of just under 2mm diameter cut to about 25mm length. I have wired a tell-tail flag onto it to remind me to remove it from the refuelling nozzle after refuelling. After carefully checking I wasn't going to drill into anything vital, I drilled 2mm hole inside the refuel cap hinge to stow it.
Tool for unclipping headlight sliders
This is just a bit of wire suitably shaped to fit over the tab which has to be pulled up,to release the headlamp units. It works much better than a screwdriver and I have stowed mine in an existing hole in the bodywork. It is loose in the hole but it's size ensures it won't fall out.

Cool cubby box is a great one. Had this on an old Focus years ago, could open/close a vent into the glove box.
Just read the instructions - good point about hot air feeding in, wonder if a suitable connector could be sourced which had some for of detachable cap so it could be closed off.MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

I love little mods like this, but....why not put your chocolate in your lower glove box? It already has a feed from the HEVAC and this can be slid closed when not needed?
The headlamp lifter is cool - I use a looped cable tie, but it gets lost

That's interesting. Mine doesn't have that. I got the idea from my wife's Saab which has a chilled cubby box but have never seen it on a Discovery. What year and spec is yours?

This was what I was looking for but couldn't find one easily. Its off a Saab. It just slides to open & closed positions.

like the cubby box mod, may mod my cubby fridge with that one
as for fuel trigger holder, your fuel cap fits perfectly so if your doing a bit fill up just pop the cap in the trigger and it holds it XC90 T8 R Design Pro

Excellent mods. I love the chiller. It's how they did it in the old days!
Put these into the last D4 as I was sick of nearly spelling coffee. Made a great difference & will be done to Frosty very soon

I really don't like that huge slab of black, rhinoceros scrotum hide effect, rubber along with the cheap and nasty looking tin LR badge in the centre of the steering wheel.
I know this won't be to everyone's taste but, for £7.19p (inc P&P) online, you can get the high quality OEM part that I would have preferred had been fitted in the first place....
