Alexander Graham Bell vs BT Openreach

I have good reason to believe that Mr Bell's efforts were in vain when it comes to BT Openreach. There was a time that the intricate wiring achieved by the average BT engineer was a marvel to behold. But not now.

For the last few years we have been plagued by an intermittent crackle and poor volume on outgoing voice. Each and every time BT threaten a stupidly high bill if they find anything wrong on my side of the system before sending a bloke to fiddle with stuff in the street cabinet before declaring it fixed.

I gave in and had a look at 'their' side of the wiring in the master socket. After ceaseless inspection of the 2 wires that link me to the outside world I decided to implement the radical technique of wrapping a bare bit of copper around the metal terminal and screwing it down. Somehow the technique of jamming it in before screwing down on the insulated bit of the wiring didn't accord with Mr Bell's patent.

Nearly 3 years of issues are now history. If only I could send BT a huge bill as I found a problem on 'their' side. No wonder they don't want people looking at the wrong side of the master socket.

How many engineers did you have out. That should of been swapped out on the first visit. I should know I am one of those engineers. The first thing I do is check it if there's issues replace and check again. It's called upgrading and you don't get charged for that.

I think he is famed for patenting and producing a commercialised product. Wasn't some Italian bod recorded as the inventor?

I had a good result with BT Business a little while ago. My contract was renegotiated in February on about a 20 minute phone call with BT Local Business ending up with a new mobile phone and contract including a Femto cell so I could get mobile in the house all for the same price I had been paying just for line rental and pathetic broadband (3meg on a good day). That was the good news as BT Business billing couldn't read my new contract and kept billing me for what they thought they wanted me to pay. Five months later , numerous phone calls and more that five hours on the phone it seems to be settled. It would appear they have also settled my claim for five wasted hours by crediting my account with more than £250 - result.

It's all a bit disputed I think. IIRC, the story goes that AGB was working in the Patent Office when he found an application from Antonio Meucci and he went and patented in his own name. He was taken to court but Meucci died before a verdict was reached. Don't suppose we'll ever know for sure really...

Too many.

They seemed more keen to tell me about all the issues introduced to the street cabinet due to contractors and FTTC.

Hi,

You might gain a bit of benefit on your broadband speed by twisting your blue pair all the way up to the terminals on the back of the socket.

Cheers

I get 76.5 / 18.5 Mbps from my FTTC broadband, so not much margin left. I did think about twisting them and I may still do when I move the BT modem. The number of twists on telephone cable is pretty poor when compared to Cat 5 or greater, so the last inch or two may not add anything.

Thumbs Up
