Is this ok or am i going to stress the drive train???

Best tyres are best to be on the back, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

I am also interested in thoughts on this as I'm in a similar situation, I've just put two new on the front due to a osf puncture, however only around 5mm of tread on both rears.

ISTR new ones are best to be on the back to help stop the rear end stepping out.

It will not effect the transmission either way as long as they have the recommended pressure in them, it is only applicable to vehicles with part time 4 wheel drive that have a viscous centre differential and do not have a proper centre diff.
Vehicles with part time 4 wheel drive are predominantly front wheel drive and the least worn tyres must be fitted in the front, fitting worn tyres on the front may trick the system into thinking the front wheels are slipping and thus "switch" the 4 wheel drive on prematurely and cause unnecessary wear.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
