D4 Oil
MY16 D4. The computer generated oil level indicator has dropped one notch. I want to top it back up. I've read the spec in the book. This meets it, but is there a preferred oil choice please?

One notch is about 1/3rd of a cup full, so hardly worth doing anything yet. Keep an eye on it and when its down 3 or 4 (towards 1/2 way on the level) then put some in. Its only something like a litre from the bottom mark to the top mark on the gauge.

Does the oil display say "OK?" If it does then do nothing. When the engine needs oil it will tell you how much to add, measure it acuratley and add it.
One notch is nothing and the risk of overfilling is great. You can do alot more damage to the engine by overfilling than by running a few notches down.FFRR Westminster TDV8

Be careful if you try to top it up as the indictor doesn't give a true reading of how much you need.
I think you should only top up when the car asks for it or you will end up with it being overfilled.

Resist the urge to top-up at all costs unless it tells you.
Supplying dealership overfilled mine prior to collection. Do not drive warning only showed when I went into oil level. This was the morning after I'd given it a thorough workout!
Supplying dealership's attitude was crap. Car was trailered to my usual dealership who sorted it all out at no charge as well as noting the excess oil for future reference.

Many thanks indeed everyone. I'll get some Castrol Edge in ready. Yes it says ok when I check the oil and appreciate the gauge isn't a true indication. I'll leave the oil until it says it wants some despite it driving me mad.
Thank you.

I have a 12 year old Land Rover too so there's always plenty to worry about
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
