Oil Specification D3 4.4v8 |
|
Hi,
I am about to replace oil in V8 D3 4.4 Petrol.
I see the oil spec is 5w30 which is easy to find here in Spain but I am struggling to get a match on the full specification of ACEA A1/A3
I can buy a CEPSA product which is 5w30, ACEA A1/B1-12,,, API SL / CF,,, ACEA A5/B5-12
https://www.cepsa.es/stfls/comercial/FICHE...W30_v2.pdf
But that doesn't match exactly what LR spec is of API GF3, API SJ or SL ACEA A1/A3
http://lr-club.com/index.php?act=attach&am...p;id=24860
So is the ACEA A1/B1 equivalent to ACEA A1/A3? I assume both numbers need to match but perhaps that isn't the case?
Would appreciate any help.

I don't think the jag engines are too fussy.
No, both number don't need to match.
As long as it has A1 or A3 in the name somewhere its fine

Thanks for your reply Pete, that really helps as there's more choice if only one of the numbers need to match.
On another point, I just learned that the 30 in 5w30 relates to warm weather temperatures.
Should I be concerned with using a 5w30 when I am in Southern Spain and the temperatures get quite hot in Summer, would a 5w40 be better in this case? Or even 10w40?
Cheers

your owners manual should give guidance as to the ambient temperature v thickness.
Usually a diagram with arrows. or maybe they stopped that in modern manuals.
I would stick to 5W30

OK, thanks... I don't have the handbook for the car so doing a bit of Google!
Just noticed, the CEPSA 5w30 oil is fully synthetic, whereas the LR spec seems to relate to semi-synthetic.
I can't find any semi synthetic at 5w30 rating.. only synthetic.
I assume synthetic is ok, just overkill? Would rather put in overkill for sure, specially considering the age of the car.
Thanks for your prompt replies, really helpful for me.
Cheers

When my last service was done the LR garage used 5W 30 fully synthetic - low ash. Not sure what low ash actually means.
Fully synthetic will be fine.

Castrol 5W30 Ultraclean is the proper oil, it's a semi synth. The 4.4 engines were not built for full synth.
110K miles and going strong.

Anyone know if there is an equivalent of this in Spain? Can't seem to find it available with that name.

Do they have Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30? Alternatively Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30?
I use the first one which is what the Shell selector recommends as the primary choice. While it is ACEA A5/B5, it meets both STJLR.03.5003 and Ford WSS-M2C913-C (which replaces A and B). Data sheet here http://tdc.ge/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/H..._5W-30.pdf
I change at 10000 km or 12 months.

Yeh, can get that Shell Helix but it's fully synthetic. The previous poster warned me off fully synthetic so I was looking for a semi synthetic 5w30, which seems to be hard if not impossible to get.
I then read some conflicting advice about the semi-synthetic vs synthetic, ranging from fully synthetic is fine, just overkill, to people saying don't use anything other than semi when semi is recommended by Manufacturer.
To be honest, a bit confused with what to do. I don't have an opinion at all as I am totally ignorant regarding oils.

European vehicles with 4.4l V8: 5W-30 WSS-M2C913-B preferred. If not available 5W-30 ACEA A1/A3 or API SJ or SL.
NAS/Japan vehicles with 4.4l V8: 5W-30 WSS-M2C205-A (ILSAC GF-3)
I don’t consider myself a subject matter expert on oil so I go with what the brand recommends.
The WSS stuff is actually licensed by Ford to the oil manufacturers - they don’t have the right to state that without the license.
Edit: Opie oils which is a site sponsor has 9 fully synthetic oils and one semi, all matching the spec. https://www.opieoils.co.uk/f/2354/915/2005/engine-oil.aspx

Castrol GTX ULTRACLEAN 5W-30 Motor Oil
After some pretty extensive research on the E Coast, I now use Royal Purple 5W30 high mileage oil. 2 years in and I have no complaints whatsoever. It's well reviewed and exceeds the standards.
However,, if the OP is in the UK, this info is utterly useless, since I don't think you can get it there! PAGODA
