Towbar removal, no key

Just to be clear from the outset - I'm NOT asking on a public forum for instructions on how to do this! Wink

My new D3 has an adjustable-height towbar fitted, which to be honest I'll almost certainly never use so I'm considering removing it and selling it (it's in really good nick, looks as though it's had very light use, if any).

Trouble is, it looks as though the section of it which goes into the receiver in the rear chassis has a lock on it the same as the standard removable towbar - for which I don't have the key. I've got in touch with the seller of the vehicle to see if they have it, but haven't heard back so perhaps I have to work on the basis of the key being AWOL.

Is it possible to remove the towbar without being in possession of a key? Will Land Rover supply a spare key? If so, what information would they need - is there a serial number on the towbar or lock somewhere?

OK, firstly no-one is going to tell you how to remove the towbar without a key other than by buying a new lock kit and that comes with a set of instructions on what to do.

However, a cheaper and much simpler alternative is just to buy a new key cut to code. I have used these people several times now with no problems:

No connection, just a happy customer. Assuming the lock has not been used for some time be prepared for a bit of effort with wd40 to get it moving....

Oddly enough, following a previous suggestion I ordered a key from them and it arrived this morning. Had already given the lock a good seeing-to with the PlusGas, and the new key works like a charm. And all for a shade under £6 including P&P Very Happy

I'm sorry, but you are a fool:
1. For not having the key with you, and
2. Thinking that anyone would give you this info on your first post.

And, luckily, Oz is such a small place I may be just around the corner.

Do you have to remove the tow bar to change the wheel then?

You don't need to remove the tow bar to change a wheel.

Oz towbar isn't same as UK IIRC, could that be the issue?

The Oz tow bar is a 2 inch class A type receiver. To remove it you just take the pin out and the tow bar part comes out. No need to remove tow bar to change wheel.

see here

Speaking of which I have one going spare for a D3. I had to buy a D4 one when in Oz as my Offroad Camper Trailer tow bar was too high for D3.

New here...so no big chance to get right information about how can I deal with lost key from my towing bracket. Yesterday we were moving my broken car (which I replaced with Disco 3) and I found out I have no idea where I put keys. Anyway, hopefully I can buy some according to lock code from UK. Not sure if I can find some here in Slovakia (will contact LR distributor on monday).
