Tailgate Subwoofer upgrade for Base Model?

Now that I have upgraded the headunit, I am starting to get the audio bug again and want to fit a subwoofer if I can. I know that on the higher spec models with the Harman Kardon systems that a subwoofer is hidden in the lower tailgate. I would like to fit an aftermarket subwoofer in that space.

I have the base model discovery, although I happen to have a Java black tailgate in my shed which has the Harman Kardon subwoofer in it, So have the possibilities of utilising that.

Has anyone else fitted an aftermarket sub into the tailgate without major modifications and keeping it hidden? If so, what size subwoofer and brand of sub have they used?

If it isn't possible to fit an aftermarket one there, is it possible to install the Harman Kardon subwoofer and run it off an aftermarket amplifier?

I will be having a spanner day on my car in a few weeks at my parents as long as the weather is good and that I am well enough, and plan on having the rear end apart anyway as I am hoping my reverse camera will have arrived by then. So if I can only use the Harman Kardon sub and run that off an aftermarket amp, then I would like to get the sub and wiring in place to save some time when I finally get round to buying an amplifier.

All information and advice greatly appreciated.

After extensive research and online searching I have found out that a 10 inch shallow mount subwoofer is the only way to go for this upgrade. Does this sound right?

Worth checking the dimensions to see if you can fit one of these instead:

Have had these in Defenders and in my Freelander toy and can highly recommend.

I have the HK Logic 7 and am NOT impressed with the sub. However the bass response from the mids is outstanding. Simply updating all six of those would be ample.
If you want to install a sub, and you should, I would recommend the Kicker 10" or 12" shallow. A minor mod to the gate for mounting is required but it takes seconds.
Check Crutchfield.com for size and models available. Then head to Amazon or brick to buy
