Pretty much in situ, just lifting the calliper and removing the pads. Although I did fully remove the front calliper and hung it up to make access easier, but not really required. If you use a colour other than black or silver then it is best to fully remove everything for painting, but black and silver are very forgiving. Having everything bolted down makes it easier to prep the surface with power tools.
I used a small paint brush (3/8") plus a artist paintbrush nicked from my daughters messy play box.
