So my D4 has been telling me to fill the DEF up for some time and I had an Amber engine management light on all the time. It wasn't counting down the miles but said i had 714 miles left in range. Someone had given me a redex 1.5L topup bottle they bought by mistake so I popped that in and the range stayed the same. I then bought another 10 Litres and poured that in and the range stayed the same too. It took 4 miles of driving and a turn off and on to get the Engine light to extinguish and range to account for the added fluid.
Not to bothered really but it did get me thinking, what happens if you have run dry and the engine won't start would it eventually have recognised the DEF just sat stationary with no engine start?

I doubt it would ever go into a no start situation.
What happens on the trucks is you get a message on the dash saying low fluid, dont top it up and let it run out this then puts a fault into the engine ecu this triggers the warning lamp you then get 40 hrs driving time then the engine drops into derate, still revs but has very little go.
Same happens if you get an exhaust warning, ie 40 hrs run time then derate.
Just about every garage in the UK now stocks adblue.

Thanks, I think on the Disco it gets to the stage where the engine will not start. I'm not near the manual at the moment but seem to recall it. Addblue everywhere like you say so not ever gonna get to the situation and it takes same time to fill as the washer bottle. Was more idle thinking as it took so long to get it to register the topup. Just had top up my DEF today, after 12,000 miles, dealer said it would last between services but this isn't the case, 4l is on offer at Halfrauds for 15 quid with the right adapter

Actually if you have a trade card you can get some decent prices/deals in there.
At the Daf truck dealer I used to work at adblue was 50p litre.

Bought 10 litres for £19.99 at Esso services, they have it on tap at the truck pumps anyone tried that?
The redex 1.5l had a screw fit that attached but the 10L was just a pipe which worked fine just glugged a lot and had potential to splash back if your not looking what your doing. MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten
