My D4 HSE

I thought i should say hello properly.

I have a D4 2010 HSE in Stornaway Grey.

I came to the D4 from a Z4MC. As everyone loves a picture, here we go:

I owned the car above for 3.5 years and loved it. I didn't really want to get rid of it, but due to being so small, it was stopping me socially doing things i wanted to do, and it wasn't ideal for work either. I had been trying to decide what i should replace it with for a while, but couldn't decide. I had a defender previously to the Z4 and was tempted to go back, but as i do a lot of long distance driving, i thought it might be a bit much in a Defner. I also had to consider the boss, as my car would be used for all our (i would say family duties but we don't have a family) so lets just says all our days out, travelling etc etc. My father told me not to get a LR, as he had a very bad experience with a RRS. It went continuously wrong, and the garage took it back in the end. I went against him, and used my previous experience of the 90 Td5 and a D2 Td5 and thought i would give the D4 a try. I thought it fitted all the above requirements perfectly.

So the next decision was to what age, spec etc. In the end, i decided i didn't want to invest a large amount of cash into a car, due to mortgage etc etc, so decided a early 6 speed D4 was the way forward. I could have probably got a GS Spec 8 Speed, but really wanted a HSE (possibly XS).

I knew this forum was where i would need to join having previously been on defender2.net and i just so happened a very nice car popped onto my radar from here.

So i ended up with a 2010 D4 HSE which came from jester1967's stable.

Ive got a few nice external bits on the car over the basic HSE spec. LR sump guard, rock sliders, Prospeed ladder, full size spare & RDL lock.

In terms of driving, i don't find the 6 speed lacking at all. Im sure the 8 speed is a lot better and the one to have, but i personally couldn't justify the extra cash required to step up to an 8 speed. I also do like the agriculturalness of the car generally, which includes the slightly old hat gearbox etc. To me, it just reminds me a little of my previous land rovers to date, and it sets them apart from other boring cars, and other 4x4 manufacturers. Im sure for a lot of people, they dislike this, which is maybe why the newer vehicles are more desirable etc. I do wonder how the D5 will compare to the D4, and if it will feel very removed from LRs of the past, however capable and nice they are.

I do plan to keep the vehicle for a while, and hope it proves a reliable work horse. Its been in the garage once for a restricted performance error message which turned out to be a new fuel sensor housing etc, which seems to be common. Ive also invested in an IID BT tool, and a new battery.

I ventured out last week onto a couple of green lanes in surrey, just near the M25. The car is extremely capable, and i do want to use it for what it was designed for. Couple of pictures:

This forum has been very helpful, and a couple of members have also been extremely helpful when sorting the couple of issues i have had.

Hoping to get .Geoff to do a gearbox flush at some point as well to keep everything running well.

Good choice - I have an early 2010MY, but registered in September 09 - one of the first D4s. Purchased at 4 years old. The HSE spec is a step up over the XS and I agree the 6 speed auto is great.
Only minor issues so far - the fuel sensor (which I fixed myself), new front wheel bearings, and rear brake lines replaced in copper.

Even better my better half has bought a z4 Thumbs Up - the contrast driving both during the week is quite stark

Cheers chaps.

@JKsD4 I have had the same issue with the the fuel sensor, which is what was causing the restricted performance message. Good work fixing it yourself. I got the garage to do mine, but I since invested in an IID BT tool, so hope to start doing more of my own diagnostics etc. Seems the problem is common.

Yours looks great by the way as well!

Managed to enable the reverse follow me home lights with the IID tool. Was really easy actually. 8)

I think my next big one will be to try to update the instrument cluster to MY12 version. I believe this is possible, although I need to do some more research.

There's an update that changes very slightly, but it is not the 2012 software look I'm afraid.

Nice looking car Thumbs Up

Ah ok, thanks for letting me know.

Is it worth doing then, or not really worth it?

D4 got treated yesterday to a Geoff gearbox flush, and new rear disks and pads.

EPB is now working correctly again

So today, I flashed the IPC ECU so the the instrument panel is slightly updated.

I do prefer the look.

The ECU flash with the IID was really easy and straight forward.

Here you go:

Just after pressing the start button -

Ignition on, without engine running.

The grey areas have been removed. I didn't take a before picture
