nz north island where to go to try disco offroad |
|
Hi,
I 've had my disco for 5 months, and apart from trying it out in the dunes and on some odd muddy tracks, I'd like to take it a bit further. That is without dinging it. Any advice on areas local to Tauranga, that would be nteresting, slightly testing, that is without the missus shouting " your going to dent it".
I did some extreme off roading in UK at Langdale quest, which was excellent, but whether I'd take the family disco is another thing But, seeing the bonnet covered with water/mud would be neat!!
Any advice ????

I dont know about North Island but I have a friend with a gazillion acre farm in South Island, near Christchurch.Amazing mountain tracks.Never tried it with a 4 X 4 but have done it with a Grizzly ( quad) whilst chasing a few thousand sheep with 9 dogs and a six pack of Canterbury.
Theyre so lucky down that side of the world , green with envy.Good Luck !

G'Day BoatieNZ
I used to lodge in Rotorua & have to drive to Mt Manganui each day....
Eventually guys I worked with at the Fletchers Pplant in the Mt told me about the Tauranga direct road...Rotorua to just outside Tauranga
You drive out & round Lake Rotorua then its signposted....
A bit of it is tarmaced - the rest of it gravel....there maybe roads tracks off this area
Had great fun driving my SAAB along here at a great rate of knots...going to work will never be the same...
Get the wife to drive the Disco along here she will get the hang of what Discos are all about
I will also speak to a couple of guys who still work for Red Stag....they both drive off road cars & have forest knowledge....
If you PM me I will get my elder daughter (lives in Henderson) to come up with some roads
she works for the Waitakere Council (cover a large area of bush - I will ask her recomendations BREXIT - done properly.

...back in 1999 went to NZ intending to live there..sadly didnt work out a couple of family illnesses
I worked for Fletchers accross five sawmill sites in the Bay of Plenty & did lots of traveling around there. Every two weeks I came back to Wellington for the weekend (6hrs there & 6 hrs back) the roads are good bit like narrow B roads here. But arent straight & you have to "drive" - turn corners all the way.
The Desert Road is awsome - especially in winter look on the map below Lake Taupo - a bit like like the North Yorks moors but at 3000 feet with Volcanos (active) at each side !
One daughter still lives there (citizen) the other qualified as a dentist there (a scarfie !) she bought Horace the Morris Minor) which is currently being shipped back to UK
I enjoyed my time there - a stunning country with nice people.
I get back whenever I can
.......definately worth a trip there BREXIT - done properly.
