I'm going to Applecross in a couple of weeks before the midges wake up! Was that your first visit? If so it won't be your last.....

I've never had a problem with midges on Nevis (been up around 10 times).
Get some Smidge anyway if coming in the summer and, unless you're camping, you're sorted.

I was up in the mountains in June last year and the midges had not woken up. It was a cold spring up there last year delaying them. Maybe this year will be the same. North face of Ben Nevis in the distance.

Midges can't fly when there is more than a gentle breeze, so best to stay in your tent, caravan, bed or pub until the wind gets up in the morning.

I go to Applecross two or three times a year, and for the past two or three years have not been bothered by midges. We went so far as to have a picnic on a summer's evening on the banks of a lovely burn on the estate and didn't get bitten once. That time/place is, of course, prime midge territory. Most uncharacteristic of the Highlands. Up the road in Torridon though the midges were as voracious as ever.

Not a midge in sight on Applecross. Somewhere in the distance is the cottage I hired. Whilst
I was there someone told me that most of Applecross is owned by the WD & HO Wills Tobacco family. Is that true?
They have a beautiful house, Applecross House, where the Walled Garden restaurant is and the food is great.

Yep, seem to remember that. A lot of the old estates are or were owned by wealthy individuals or companies. One of the biggest I can remember is Lever Bros, the detergent people, owned most of South Harris. They decided to build a large harbour and village, both still there and known as Leverburgh. In the same area was Lord and Lady Gubbins, he was actually a Major General and in charge of the Special Oprations Executive instrumental in WW2 for overseas sabotage and subversion.Others include people from other businesses like Brewers, noted Academics of old money, new monied foreigners and the likes.

I've got 3 weeks off at the end of August so I fancy doing a one man and his Disco road trip around the Highlands and Islands.

A beautiful place

We live 3/4 way around the highland 500 (going clockwise) so drive parts of this regularly - definitely recommend to anyone here to do at least once, especially the far north west and north coast section. Hardest choice is whether to take the z4 or the Disco next month when we do the whole lot again Very Happy

Had to get the Smidge out last night while doing some work on the car.
Bit of a shock to fly to the Midlands today.
I arrived with no jumper or jacket having had a couple of weeks with wall-to-wall sunshine at home.
Brrr...it's grim down South! Wink
