Council MOT testing?
Thinking of using the Guildford Borough Council testing place for the dreaded MOT, anyone any experience of council MOT centres in general or the Guildford one specifically? There is also a VOSA test centre in Guildford, are they just commercials or any good for cars?

Council testing, straight forward, they don't do repairs so your pass / fail / advisories are straight black and white interpretation of the rule book.statutory 10 days to return for retest.

Yes, council MOT Stations are very well run and have nothing to gain by saying that you need work done to your vehicle.

Going to try the one at Chelmsford before Easter. Main concern is a split gaiter on rear air spring. Should I remove it as best I can? have read that testers can see it as a fail?
Thoughts?
The MOT ought to be....independent....impartial
All testing in Norther Ireland is at government test centres.BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Following Martin Lewis recommendation - moneysavingexpert not the big man here - I told my son and daughter to use council MOT depots (Oxford and East Riding) and so far no issues at all for the last 4 years
I haven't kept anything long enough for MOT for many years but if I did I'd be using them Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW
Still hoping for a S2 one day!

As a start I have to confess a personal interest, until I took early retirement last year, I managed the transport for two large County Council fleets, including their MOT test facilities, over a 25 year period. They are totally independent and the testers are completely impartial, in one council I managed, the DVSA used to use our facilities to carry out appeals tests where a member of the public had complained about the result from another testing station. A number of people including Martin Lewis concentrate on the potential money saving aspect of council testing centres not trying to generate income from failing items that are marginal and that is very relevant but they seem to miss the really significant safety related area of MOT test stations looking at a failure related item and thinking 'that looks a really s**t job and I might be asked to fix it' and deciding to put it on the ticket as an advisory notice or even ignoring it completely.
My advice to any vehicle owner, Land Rover or otherwise, would be if you feel competent to do the work yourself then do so and enjoy the money savings and the satisfaction, if not use a trusted independent but get your MOT tests done by a council run facility as an independent check of the quality of the work.

Council MOTs have worked well for me, but might need to bear in mind that there are only certain times that they do public MOTs - up this way it's midday every day - only 1 slot.
I did have to take it back in after a fail but there was no re-rest fee
Will definitely stick to the Council going forward.

I'd also be interested in the view on this as i also have a small split and the MOT is due in a couple of months.
