Red is a little distracting in the car .. Might use red one to monitor the 2 batteries in the trailer

What sort of printer is required for this out of interest? And i don't mean for someone to say '3D printer'
3D is an interesting area, I'm curious on the cost to get something decent to make something like this up. Ive seen the 3D printers in M4plin and CPeeC but curious as to whether this requires serious investment or whether any machine would be useable.
Although, my design skills would see nothing work haha

How does the battery monitor work? Does it change colour dependant on voltage? It looks a very neat job you've done

Jack ...I purchased a Chinese copy printer as I though if it's a whim or I can't use it then Iv not lost a lot .
As it turned out ( after it it's time getting used to it and setting it up ) .. I now can't fault it and use it all the time
Tayaste ...my monitor is purely indicating which one or two batteries are connected ( ie .. When the dual battery system switches over I can see its charging the second battery)
There is an indicator light on the unit .. But that's under the bonnet
Wired in today .. Looks more at home there

I put a bit more thought into my 3D Printer purchase than Adrian I think....
But to be fair did pay the very thick end of a grand for it - its a CEL Robox - took a bit of fettling to get it running reliably but I can't recommend it enough
I've used mine to make a bezel to fit two narrow Maplin switches into a blanked space on my dash

The fun part of this is the design angle - one of the first things you need to buy is a vernier gauge for measuring bits and spaces - and then you've got to get to grips with some design software - not sure what Adrian uses but (as an iT Geek and ex-professional programmer) I'm using OpenSCAD so I can just code up the object! What are these printers and software like for a novice? Do you need some 3D cad knowledge or are they relatively easy to learn?

The CEL Robox is as close to a commodity plug-and-play 3D printer as you can get
Install the software
Plug it in
Run in a reel of filament
Fire up Automaker
Run the basic calibration steps (bed and nozzle calibration)
Load in a 3D model
And press Print - and sit watching it like a kiddy as your print grows
Example....
thingiverse.com and myminifactory.com are great sources of pre-built models
Or you can design stuff in Sketchup and as I said I use OpenSCAD
The world's your oyster (as long as it'll fit in your build volume)!Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
