Whirling Sound When turning the Steering Wheel? |
|
hey all, thanks for these awesome forums. They have been so helpful to my search, purchase and use of my 2015 LR4 HSE. Love it!
I just noticed today when driving that when I turn my steering wheel I can hear a whirling type sound. Happens when its both directions turn. I have to turn off the heater/music to hear it. its quite subtle but it is there. I don't have any other issues to report. Normal steering, weight, no vibrations, etc. Just a whirling sound...any thoughts? should I be concerned?..the sound at first was like a seatbelt rubbing on my ski jacket but its not...but that's what it sounds like overall. happens when I turn left or right. Otherwise brand new 4500 miles on the car and no issues thus far! (except for seat rattle that was fixed and b-pillar rattle that was fixed!)
thanks!

Mine had this too, it got quite loud in the end. Dealer changed some "cassette" in the steering wheel, I guess some sort of ribbon cable ? Velar MY18 D180 S Narvik

Now you mention it, I get a quiet "swish" noise when turning the wheel - I thought it may have been the rear of the padded centre portion of the steering wheel brushing against the hard plastic surround, but will have to investigate a little more now

Was it a complicated job Robse? I have had this problem from new but it was a case of CBA to go back to the dealer with it. Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

Sounds like from what people are saying it is the Rotary Coupler ( Clock Spring in Ford Speak) making this noise.

Took it in and they validated the sound. They ended up taking off the steering column cover and insulating the sound. Not sure what that means! Can't hear it at all. Not sure if it's a good fix or a temporizing measure... Thoughts? Took 1.5 hours along with some other things like headlight washer and windshield screen fix and engine remap which was a documented need. 2015 LR4 HSE
