Thanks Phil i'll add the 75 degs stage to the fun tomorrow Thumbs Up

Interesting that ZF say oil changes must be done within 75000 miles and 8 years max. Thats a bit less than LR's service schedule !

That stage is already in the guide, as is a description of its purpose, with the correct temperature for a D4 stated.

So no worries.

Flush2 done. Oil that came out was in a better condition than oil drained out in Flush1, so thats good Thumbs Up
I found that when the temp teaches about 67-68 degs and the heat exchanger thermostat opens the temp drops back to 64 degs. So thats how to tell its open Smile

Did my first partial change last weekend thanks to Robbie's excellent guide Bow down . Oil coming out seemed in good condition so that was a relief as car has one 50k miles and ex-LRE as far as I can tell so I was worried about excessive wear. Going to be changing gearbox oil every 20k now to preserve.

One question about the gearbox adaptations reset - if I reset it now at 50k miles do I reset it every time I do a partial change if I were to stick to a 20k interval? Of just this once and then not when it gets to higher mileage? I have not reset them yet. What if I do not reset them? Is this good practise or will it make to difference to the drive / life?

How much oil did you get out the box? Each time ive done mine i only get 3.5-4litres. I would recommend doing 2 flushes (. I did mine 6 months apart). Then a good % of the oil will have been replaced.

I didnt reset the box as it was working well before and after Thumbs Up

Thanks dlgis. By weight about 3.8 litres out. I put in about 4.2 I think guessing how much I lost in the overfills.

It is a good shout about the 2nd flush in 6 months time - I have 5.5 litres left over and just ordered another 10 litres as it is quite cheap on ebay from Germany at the moment (£45 for 10 litres), so I am going to think about doing a partial change more regularly as you suggest.

Box working well before and after so think I will leave the reset alone unless someone can suggest why it is better to do it.

Excellent, thank you digis. I hope you don't mind if I post a link to this on the Australian Land Rover Owners forum, I will wait for a bit to make sure.

I have a MY13 which has now done 75000km, 50% of this towing 3.2t caravan. I had the oil changed at 52000km at the normal service, it was also very black, I kept a sample of it I intended to get it analysed but have not as yet. Gearbox durability is the biggest and perhaps the only concern I have with this car, I guess we will see over time.

Again, thanks for the excellent work.

Regards

Peter

My pleasure and you can link to wherever you like, including the entertaining chaps on AULRO. Although I think the guide has already made it that far south.

The guide certainly has reached Aus, been linked in the sticky thread for transmission servicing for awhile now.

Robbie, I have reached 56,000km (close to 35k miles) and still under warranty (MY14).
I am considering getting dealer to do a partial flush due to being slightly hesitant about warranty but also about my own skills to be honest.

So does the workshop manual procedure match your guide steps? Have you added any extra steps or checks that you consider to be to a higher level of safety or better practice?

I ask because the service manager told me they have never had to touch an 8 speed for a fluid change so I'm nervous about my D4 being a guinea pig.

Regards,
Scott

The procedure listed on Topix is pretty good and does not need any additional steps, so an easy job for your dealer.

Has anyone replaced the filter at the same time as a flush. I'm plucking up courage to do the flush and was thinking it would be a good idea to change the filter at the same time but finding it difficult to get the part online. Is it stealer only part?

Do you really need to change the filter, as I would leave it alone until 10 years / 150k or during any mechanical changes to the gearbox?
