Heavy load is defined by ZF as "continuos" high speed driving above 90mph (IIRC) or lots of towing. Essentially, anything that gets the gearbox oil temps higher than normal (60-70 degrees) for a period of time

I dont see the gearbox being worked hard at 70mph on the motorway Thumbs Up

The temps are still ok at values higher than that, just in case anyone is concerned. Indeed, when the thermostat opens the oil passes through a heat exchanger that will be running at whatever temperature the engine coolant is at.

In reply to a question about which transmission fluids can be used in the ZF8 - I would say that any ATF that specifically claims to meet the standard required for the ZF8 will work just fine.

It certainly does not have to be ZF Lifeguard 8 or Lifeguard 8 with a Land Rover sticker on the side (LR023289), so just buy the cheapest one you fancy. I only used the fluid I did because it came up cheap on eBay - I would not buy it at normal retail price.

Change early, change often.

Rob, great write up as usual.

Clearing the adaptions is indeed recommended when performing an oil change. Its also a good time to check if the firmware is up to date.

I think Mercedes were the only car manufacturer that used to make their own Autoboxes and they were b....y good at it from what i recall.... and you could drain the torque converter when doing an oil change.
Well i could on my W124's

Robbie - is this the procedure that a LR main dealer would follow? I assume it's from a ZF workshop manual.....

It covers everything in the ZF and the JLR workshop manual, plus a little bit more.
