Wont Start

Hi Guys,

After having read multiple posts on non starting engines I have had no luck.

Driving along fine the suddenly no power and engine cuts out. Pull to hard shoulder and try to crank engine, very slowly cranked but wouldn't fire. AA drove me home on a flatbed.

No fault codes coming up.

I can get the car to run up for a few seconds then it dies. If I plant my foot the the floor on the throttle it will run for longer but still only rev up to 1k and sounds VERY lumpy.

Replaced fuel filter, which helped but still 99% the same. I can hear the lift pump working when ignition turned on, I have checked HP pump belt and thats intact and fine. I have also disconnected the air flow meter just in case that was sending odd signals but no improvement.

EGR valves are already blanked off.... So assume these can't cause an issue any more?

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks!!!

Despite being able to hear LP fuel pump I would first test the delivery flow and pressure at the schrader valve under engine cover towards rear left of the V. There is a how to by Robbie if you search.

Ok I will double check that... Even though i can hear it I must say it sounds like it sucking air and then liquid... Not sure how to describe it... Will search for the post.

Thanks

Given your comment about slow cranking, have you checked the voltage, although I would have expected that to show as an issue on the dash.

The voltage is fine. It was cranking slowly like the engine was tight. It cranks over fine now. It does seem to be drawing quite a few amps when cranking though....

Have you got plenty of correct fuel in and bled the system after changing the filter and checked you have got the fuel pipes on correct if pre my07.
Timing belt tensioner?- valve timing out.

Yes has good fuel, going to try a fresh batch this weekend none the less.

Fuel pipes on as they came off. Fuel has bled though and engine fires then stops.

I am going to check the pressure from he bleed valve this weekend also. I guess that shows pressure from the lift pump?

So long as you have a good consistent flow from the schrader valve will be ok, can you check the pressure in the fuel rail?- Iid tool can do it, but I would be checking the timing belt particularly if the engine seems "tight", there have been some close calls Thumbs Up

Had one a bit like this today and whilst checking the usual I could hear a little bit of a hum from the alternator. After far more faffing than usual we worked our way to the alternator and found it almost impossible to turn so the drag on the accessory belt would have been huge.

Along with some chaffed wires to the diagnostic port it was a whole world of the unexpected.

Ahh ok. I did put a new belt on not long ago and checked all the bearings and alternator and it was fine but i guess it could have gone bad. Worth checking! Anything that I can check / test for free gets my vote!!

Ok guys.

Got her running today, very rough and smokey but had her up at 2500rpm for a min or so then she died. the fuel rail pressure reads 28-30MPA guess this is right as surely car wouldn't run at all if HPFP had died?

Lift pump working ok.

Injector offsets read 1.0k when started.

Hi sfxjoe,

Did you get any further with finding your problem - I only ask as it sounds so very similar to mine.
