I would really like to have a hidden/discrete winch. I am not sure what for if not for the idea of getting me out of trouble when I am going solo(and I got stuck in the past).
I have seen few options of discrete mounts. Sadly the price for a package including winch are extremely high and always in the range of £2500-3000.
However when I look at prices for discrete winch mounts these are around £300 and winches seems to be starting around £4-600. Are the other £1200-2000 labour?
Clearly I am missing something.
The winch kit I had was a 12,000lb Ryder winch fitted using an LR mount as shown above, it was originally fitted to our first D3 before being moved into the D4.
I seem to remember the thinking was that the 8500lb oem winch, although seemingly being capable of pulling a laden D4 on normal surfaces, even off road, it would possibly struggle if the vehicle was bogged down in mud or wet sand due to the great suction affect these substrates have when a vehicle has sunk deep into them, so the 12,000lb gave that extra bit of grunt for such occasions.
Hope that helps
BTW I removed the winch and sold it a couple of months back because in all the years of ownership it only ever got used 4 times in earnest.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

When I was doing Off-road Events I found the rear winch was best for getting out of trouble - the front one just pulled me further in. Stew,
2010 D4 gone but I really loved it
Went back to Merc - C350 AMG

Where do you fit the rear one?
